saeed, thank you! very happy you like my photos. flattered really. there are 3 or 4 different sets of dunes in death valley. these dunes are the largest (in the US) and rise to 700 feet. nestled at one end of a narrow valley they are pure windblown sand. i don't believe there is any rock beneath these. however, they are composed of "singing sand". the sand grains are hollow and with the right wind conditions they will howl or sing. pretty eerie sound really.

The two colours of great effect on the whole composition, amazing nature superb shot.. The big sand dunes are they pure sand or a kind of rocky (small mountain) covered by sand? 'cos we have both of those kind we know them by the ancient given names, Regards,Saeed

hugo, very familiar! to the letter actually ;^) there was a group of campers there and they had been flying ultralites earlier that day. they were the kind of ultralite that uses a square parachute as wings. very colorful. too bad they weren't up when we came by.
i decided to play some more with the original after you saw the candidate variations. i wanted to see if i could re-create the original look of the scene. so i produced this one and then compared it to the others.
i had a very hard time picking between this one and the browner (is that even a word?) one you liked. although the saturated one is more appealing it is also quite far from what i experienced. so i compromised. i posted this version of this photo and my next photo will be obscenely saturated. to make up for this one of course ;^)
i figured your absence had something to do with the new toy ;^) i keep waiting to see the results...

Hi Tom,
Been very busy lately, so not many post, nor any comments.... And This one seems vaguely familiar....;o)
I like this shot alot, it looks almost extraterrestial. I'd love to see a huge 4WD coming over the sandy hill with alot of dust in its wake.... The absence of a single point of attraction / focus (viewer wise) would create the tension in this shot. Needless to say, the scene is already bloody impressive as is.... God! how i would love to see DV next year....;o)
That must sound quite familiar as well....
I know I tend to make images too red, but I think it does (somewhat) make up for the heat that can't be felt if you weren't actually there. The colour saturation in the foreground could be a bit heavier, and I think the optimised version lies somewhere in between....
Still, I think this is a wonderful shot, wery well captured, too.
Hope I'll have more time in about two weeks time... Been doing quite some photography work with my D100 (passed the 1000 mark already... ).

Very nice Tom.
Excellent blend of colors and the clarity is very good.
I'm not sure if it is the rock mountain that complements the sand or the sand that complements the mountains.
Either way a very good composition.
