About 2005.09.30 off the PCH near big sur on the centtral california coast. looking for that elusive sunset on the pch. turned out to be a dud but i managed to get this silhouette instead.

what you see here is the edge of a promontory just south of big sur. the drop to the ocean below is about 1000 feet or so. the foamy/misty stuff is actually the cloud layer that had settled directly on the water. as we watched, it came up to the shore and proceeded to rise above us and eveloping us in a dense fog.

i apologize to you all for disappearing for a while but i've been working very hard lately. last week i had a chance to drive up the pch from la and then over to yosemite (those photos are coming up soon). as always, any and all comments welcome and much appreciated.

camera data: 1/2500 @ f/5.6, -1EV, ISO 100, polarizer, handheld.
ps data: curves, levels, color balance, resizing, and framing. no crops. no cloning.

I came across your portfolio after clicking on your "Best in Project" image that was featured on the front page. And now here I am viewing your last image from quite awhile ago. I don't know if you'll get this message or not but I just want to say that I really like the "about" on your images... so very informative... I think this should be the way each of the images people upload should be like - it is so very helpful. I see you mentioned being very busy but that you would soon upload some images from Yosemite. I don't know why that never happened, I can only imagine you have still been busy. But if you do see this message and have some time, for whatever it's worth, I would love to see those images. I live in California also and am sure I would learn a lot by seeing what you have.

Take care and happy holidays,
Brigitte

Wonderful shot, Tom. I love the low flying cloud. Reminds me of an old musical called Brigadoon. Cheers, Ann.

It's the occasional Rumland image like this that makes me ache for more postings. By the way, glad to finally meet you with an updated profile image.

Hya Tom,

Is this your last image? No uploads since October?! You need to change that...:)

The strongest point about this photo is the atmosphere, very tranquil, very indepht, contemplative feel. The bright light of the moon, illuminating the mist filled gulley is very strong. I also like the in essence centered (vertically, that is) build up, mainly created by the recession in the foreground and the centered moon, nicely broken by the off centered placement of the figure. Cool shot.

Sure hope to see some more of your photos soon... I know there's a vast database of unpublished work screaming to be shown...:)

Talk to you soon,

Cheers,

hugo

This works on many levels, Tom. Just very well handled, compositionally and exposure-wise.

that's probably because they are clouds ;^) they had settled on top of the ocean below (about 1000 feet down). in california they call it 'marine layer'. the waves here barely look like ripples because we are so far above the water.

thanks for stopping by. i'm very glad you dug it, too.

take care,
tom

Excellent shot, Tom!

I like the sharpness and the composition of this shot. The waves looks like clouds, giving me the feeling this shot was taken above the clouds.

Cheers! Bobby

Hi Tom, What a great image! There are so many things to like. The color is terrific, the framing done just right. Wouldn't change a thing. Not much going on. Working hard, finally have a break. How do you like your new camera. Awesome, huh?

Glad to oblige - I had to find *something* to gripe about, not easy here. Now I see that Ian is right about the unsharp background, looked to me like fuzz from fog but I guess it is optical.

Thanks for the comments good to see your back and look forwards to more.

stefan, i was waiting for that! i wondered who would bring up the tilt first ;^) i noticed it right after i uploaded the photo and decided to leave it up and see if someone would say something. i'd like to fix it but it seems to be getting pretty good ratings ;^)

take care,
tom

hi sally, thanks! it was hard not getting blinded ;^) i wore my shades while i shot it and composed rather quickly. the polarizer i used also helped. it wasn't too bad tho, late afternoon sun isn't that strong and the clouds below cut down on the super-bright haze you normally get in these shots.

btw, i have an ir shot of yosemite valley coming up. trying to get it right before i post it. any advice?

take care,
tom

thanks tushit! glad you like it. actually, i forgot to mention it in the 'about' but you are absolutely correct. i used a 2 stop polarizer and also -1EV of compensation to keep it nice and dark.

take care,
tom

Really very good! I love the out of focus background here. I can understand how people mistake this for waves. Perhaps from this height you are demonstrating a similarity to the process of waves rolling in and the movement of clouds.

hey lee, good to hear from you. actually, your questions incited me to add some text to the 'about'. what you see are not waves at all. it is the cloud layer. the ocean is about 1000 feet down from here and the waves look like mere ripples. very cool, i thought ;^)

i kept it from blowing out by using a polarizer which dropped me 2 stops and i added (or subtracted) an additional -1EV. this resultted in a relatively dark shot which needed a bit of color balancing to get the clouds back to white from a dirty yellow color. i also copied the background into a new layer with a multiply blend at 100% to get the sky nice and dark blue.

why f/5.6? well, why not? ;^) actually i was looking for a receding sense of depth starting from a sharp silhouette. looks like it worked well.

i'll be stopping by to see what you've been up to lately. might take a bit as i ramp back up to full posting mode ;^)

take care,
tom

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 10/7/2005
I really like how you chose to present this. The dark blue is really rich and the silhouette is detailed and interesting - not often the case when it stretches across the whole image like this. A great composition too and shooting straight into the sun seems pretty gutsy to me... Everything is sharp so I guess there was no need to shoot at a smaller aperture but it looks as if you had plenty of latitude. Now if you could take out that tilt :p

This was worth the wait - it's a really stunning shot.
It looks like two totally different photos - with the ultra sharp, motionless and dark silhouette in the foreground, and then in the centre you get a peak at soft, light and moving.
How did you take the shot without blinding yourself?

This is a beautiful shot. I love the colors. What filters have you used in this shot? I guess a polarizer for sure, am I right?

Hey Tom.
It's always a pleasure to see you post and this shot is killer !
If I had tried to guess the settings I would have been all wrong.
The silhouette is great and the waves give off a very misty feeling.
Not sure how in the world you kept the sun from blowing out the entire shot but you did.
Excellent Shot !
Look forward to checking out some of your other work.
Weird that you show up today as I just tried to go to your web site this morning.....it was down :(
Have a Great Day Tom.
Lee
