About 10.02.2004: this is the reason why i didn't want to wait for sunset at aguereberry point (previous post). this spring fed pool is almost the lowest point in the western hemisphere at 279 feet below sea level. the lowest point is actually 282 ft. below sea level and is in the middle of the salt pan where i shot "extremes". a dry lake bed, the salt pan is actually an accumulation of salt, gravel and silt 9,000 feet deep. the hottest temperatures on earth have been recorded here. Although the world record is 136F measured in libya (1922), furnace creek (a few miles north of here) holds the official second highest temperature ever recorded at 134F. however, unofficial temps of 140F have been recorded at badwater. the mountains you see here are the black mountains and are composed of metamorphic rock that dates back 1.8 billion years and is the oldest rock found in death valley. for reference, dante's view is almost 6000 feet directly above badwater.

thank god for pre-visualization. we got here mere minutes before the sun disappeared and at the exact moment to produce the photo i had imagined. i would've liked a more impressive sky but hey, we make do with what we're given.

credit and a big thank you to michael kanemoto for fixing the sky and it's reflection. it was a lot of work but michael pulled off an excellent job. he even brought out some very nice detail in the water. the issue with the sky was an uneven coloration that resulted from what i can only assume is the interaction between my PL filter and very wide angle lenses.

even though it looked good, i chose not to frame this at all in order to preserve the quality of the image. actual data was 1/5 @ f/22. as always, any and all comments welcome and highly appreciated.

The water may be bad, but this effort is very good. And the "About" is even better, demonstrating your knowledge of the place. That knowledge shows itself in your timing and the excellent resulting image you achieved, Tom.

Congrats on the BIP for this image.

Tom, very nice image. Well done! When I first looked at it, I thought you applied some sort of warp to it, but looking closer, it is the actual slope and the reflection that make it appear so. Very interesting visually. Excellent!

Hi Tom, Always nice to see one of your shots on the main page. (no need to look, it's the BIP part of the main page)

Absolutely beautiful!! When I was there, many years ago, there was very little water at Bad Water. I didn't get anything nearly as good as this!

Congratulations Tom, this is a great picture and deserves to best in project. It conveys a mood of either isolation or desolation. Don't know which. Anyway it is a wonderfully composed picture. Don.

paul, thanks for the comment. much appreciated. btw, if you get a chance to and are anywhere near DV, go. go. go. cannot recommended it highly enough. winter is a very good time to go not just because it's not an unbearable 115F but there is also no haze. the whole valley is tack sharp all the time.

take care,
tom

I am impressed !
its is almost abstract at first glance. Beautiful deep colors. and I really like your composition. Any thing over 68 degrees is too hot for me, So hats off to you. i have endured 125 dgrees and its almost too hot to sweat. on the other hand does it not get rally cold at night ?
Again a wonderful image worthy of the award.

Hi Tom; Congrats on BIP award-- a nice one! This is an excellent photo-- and even moreso with the fascinating explanation about the location, some geologic history etc. Composition is right on and exposure and reflection are excellent. I understand what you mean by correcting skies as I also do a lot of landscape/seascape photos w/ polarizer. I drove across Death Valley in 1967 (October;>)-- loved it-- but wasn't into photography then unfortunately.

I share your fascination w/ deserts-- favorite places in fact-- but we live on the Oregon Coast-- long story;>) Thanks for your very complimentary comments on my recent lichen photo. Cheers. Craig

Hi Tom, as very impressive shot indeed. I like the consised crop, limiting the view to the essential elements. Michael did one hell of a job, but the ground work is definately there.

The cloud, casting its shadow on the mountain adds a nice tension to this image, to use my preferred lingo. I alos think the deep tones and saturation by the PL filter add to the appeal of this image.

Excellent job...)

Cheers,

Hugo

I'd say if you came back a dozen time it does not count as luck any more :-) I wasn't very serious about photography when i was roaming these parts but I certainly enjoy your forays into the Mohave for recollections of things I experienced but did not go after with a camera.

I was at this site many times, but never at the "right" moment. Every minute it seems, has its own quality of light. You become so aware of the elements; sky, earth, water, light. When you are here, you are cut off from the distractions of the modern world, and it seems as if you're in a meditative state because of it. I'm really impressed with this.

tom rumland tom rumland   {K:14874} 10/16/2004
stefan, thanks! btw, your photo is very familiar to me and made me smile when i saw it. i've been coming to badwater for a few years now and it looks like your photo most of the time. this is a tough place to shoot. i had the image in my head of what i wanted but the conditions were never right. i lucked out this time (after a dozen or so trips). even so, i wanted a more dynamic sky so i guess i'll still be going back looking for the shot. it never ends... ;^)

btw, the stones in the pool are actually lumps of salt that over time grow out of the water.

take care,
tom

michael, partnership is definitely a good thing ;^) actually, i'm not sure if UF strips the color profile from uploads or not. i'm not sure how they could. however, this file is right on the edge size-wise and just adding the profile or even a frame would've put it over the edge. i didn't want to compromise quality so i decided against it. thanks again for all your help.

take care,
tom

Excellent detail Tom, very good colors and reflections.
I think that the shadow on the top of the hill adds much to this image.
Tom thank you for the tips on the hyper focal and the sensor cleaning.
Very much appreciated.
Top notch image you have here.

Excellent stuff - the little white foreground stones are a nice touch I think. I was there back when - went looking and managaged to dig out a scan I did from a slide from back in 1998. Not your kind of light or camera, but it shows how different this place can be depending on when and where you look. Cheers -S.

Impressive Landscape Tom and I like your composition of the elements. The distant hills in just the right place and the dynamic uplift of the hill on the left. Nice foreground focal points in the water. The colours give a great impression of the harsh but beautiful nature of the area. Regards John
