About chiricahua national monument in southeastern arizona. this was taken a few years ago and i've been looking for a chance to post it. actual exposure time was 14 secs at ISO 200. interesting that even at ISO 200 a 14 sec exposure would produce noise. hmm, the downside of digital ;^) what do you think?

What a unusual vision! I came across your photos by looking at Hugo De Wolf's portfolio and one of the comment and what a surprise! You have one of the best photos I have seen so far on usefilm.

Hi Tom....cool idea and well deserving of the BIP. To me it doesn't look so much like someone drowning but rather the person who waves in the planes on an aircraft carrier or somehwere like that. This is a recognised sign of someone needing help in the mountains, so you were lucky the flying doctor didn't drop in to steal your D100 ;-) best wishes and thanks also for your comments. Neil

hi sarah!

good to see you back! thanks! it is pretty cool to be on the front page occasionally ;^) apparently they rotate the BIPs for the current project on the front page.

the fisheye was one of my first lenses and i love it. but i just got the 12-24mm DX and this thing is truly amazing!! the 16mm gives me about 24mm effective angle whereas the 12 is about 18mm. VERY nice! highly recommeneded especially if you like or don't mind a bit of distortion at 12mm. if you want to see the effect, checkout my "desert skies". the distortion is not too obvious but it makes gorgeous photos.

take care,
tom

PS - i saw your post last week but i have been on the left coast working for the past 2 weeks and haven't had time to comment. i plan on catching up this week but it's going to take a while. everyone seems to have been pretty busy ;^)

Very cool shot Tom....Guess what, you made the front page. Did you see? It was up under "unusual vision" I think this "category" rotates shots, but there was your shot..... Love the colors of the sky. When did you get the fisheye? Lucky!!!

Hi Tom, Very, Very creative... Good to see you are experimenting more and more too. I noticed the soft grain of the D100 with at the 200ASA setting in my photos too. Don't think it does any harm to this shot, though. How long ago did you buy the D100?

Take care,

Cheers,

Hugo

I didn't read all comments before posting (obviously :-) I did get that it was a 14 s exposure and that too seemed long to me (at iso 200). It seemed like a good length to achieve this effect though! If the arms were flapping in wider arcs I fear that you would lose too much density. I think it is just right now. Drowning and seeing the hill as a wave is a cool view of this image!

stefan, thanks! glad you like it. btw, i messed up when i entered the shooting data. actual exposure time is 14 secs. it was dark but not too bad. i think it was just the last vestiges of sunlight before complete night. maybe the motion makes more sense now ;^)

btw, i agree with you (and sai) about the black horizon. see my comment to him above.

take care,
tom

sai., thanks! very happy you liked it. i need to warn you, this is one of my very early shots. i was still in the process of learning the technical aspects of photography and didn't really give much thought to minor artsy stuff like composition ;^) so, no, i wasn't trying to make it look as if he's drowning, but now that you mention it....

that being said, i really dig your idea. lowering the black horizon and making the wave a bit larger would look REALLY cool. i'll definitely try that out.

take care,
tom

bobby, thank you! glad you dig it. i messed up and didn't pay attention when i set the exposure time. my brain registered that entry as ">5 seconds" ;^) this shot is actually 14 seconds.

take care,
tom

It is a wonderful tenous outline of the arms. Amazed that this is such a long exposure, must have been rather dark. I think maybe a lower vantage point so that we could see more of the person's silhouette would have been a plus. It seems to me there is a little too much black at the bottom. Great sky color!

This is really unique. Love the transparent arms giving the silhouette an alien quality enhanced by the changing sky colours. Very original and neat composition.

Now that is a very cool idea!

If you plan on re-doing the image...my suggestion would be to get a little lower so that you are capturing the person waist up..increase the wing span (to half of what would look like a butterfly)...

..and the dark portions of the image occupy a quarter of the frame..not half..

right now it looks like someone is drowning..may be that was your intention?

Dan has stolen my thunder! The translucent arms REALLY ARE cool! As is the composition and graduation of colour in the sky - truely magical. As for noise, I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it. As they say, we are our aften own harshest critics :) Kind regards.
