About looking down towards palm springs and the surrounding towns from keys view in joshua tree np. the salton sea is sort-of, barely visible in the top left.

we drove out here from la in search of some nice photos but it was a scorching 113F. so we stopped in the yardhouse near palm springs for a beer or two while we waited for the magic hour. seems we waited too long and just barely made it up here about 5 or 10 minutes too late for the sunset. i setup anyway and took a couple of shots but not expecying much to come of them. i was very happy when we got home to find that this one came out pretty well. not what i expected at all. what do you think?

actual data: 3s @ f/22, 12mm, tripod & self-timer. added a +0.75EV compensation and tweaked up the saturation a bit in PS. as always, any and all comments welcome and very much appreciated.

Very nice soft pastel colors, not dramatic but emotionally appealing nevertheless. I am not sure about the composition. The rocks in the foreground seem very heavy and dominant to me versus the ethereal horizon sky. A lower stance and less rocks might solve this imbalance I perceive, but i am not sure; and I read that Jan loves the rocks, so maybe I am wrong here. Just an opinion, and thanks for your kind words to my pics. Best regards Jorg

you may have made it up later than you had intended, but you still hit some gorgeous light. Beautiful, subtle tones. Excellent perspective.

The softness works for me... the image feels like a comfy pillow...

This is nice Tom, I like the colors and I really like how the image slips into the deep soft focus but still showing the mountain ranges in the background.
Well done
Lee
ps. I'm still alive...to many irons in the pot this time of the year.
I hope you are doing well.

Hi Tom, Here is a way you can do this. Go to layer, Adjustment layer,(pick which you want to do as levels, contrast brightness etc) and then click OK. I would adjust the center slider as that will control the shadow areas, then if you want to adjust something else go make another layer and do that adjustment. If you would email me at dloseke7@yahoo.com I can help you some more with this. Don.

john, thanks for the heads-up. i bought kelby's "photoshop for photographers" which covers all this stuff. unfortunately it's written as a reference book and i keep forgeting to sift through it when i'm working on photos ;^) i should just buckle down and read it (at least the relevant chapters).

maybe experimenting with b&w should be my first read ;^) i'll definitely give it a try. if you don't see it here in the future, it means that it didn't work out ;^)

thanks again,
tom

You should really check out John Paul Camponigro's photoshop book where he gets into what to do with images like this to really bring out each individual element in a landscape photo.

I think you have the makings for an awesome photo if you explore moving it into a b&W or duotone space.

Here's the URL for the author in case you're interested:

bill, thanks! glad you liked it. see my reply to hugo (above) for my "explanation" for the softness. what do you think? is the whole thing soft? or just the background?

take care,
tom

don, thanks! and of course i don't mind! i think it looks great. matter-of-fact and for my own edification since i'm not much a PS guy beyond basic stuff, how did you do it? multiple layers and lightened one? how do you separate the top from the bottom half? just curious...

thanks again,
tom

hi hugo, thank you! glad you dig it. you know, i'm not really sure why it's soft. bill mentions that it may have been the tripod moving a bit but i can't recall if it was windy or not up there. down on the valley floor it was dead calm, tho. there was quite a bit of haze, however. i'm curious though (my monitor is about to die and won't focus properly anymore so i can't tell) is the foreground soft too? if it's only in the background then it was probably the haze.

re: the camera position, i agree. i wish i could've backed up a bit but there is a low wall directly in front of me here and with the 12mm lens i had to get pretty close but also high enough to keep it off the frame. there was another spot further to my left that would've worked as well and had plenty of room for variants. but, if you remember the about: for "joshua trippin'" there was group of fellas over there having an excedingly good time. trying to take a shot there would've been a bit awkward, if you know what i mean ;^)

again, thanks for the comment. much appreciated! i was wondering what you thought of it since you saw it before.

take care,
tom

This a great view Tom. Upon looking at this it looked like there was more detail in the shadows that was showing. I took the liberty of working on the bottom half of the picture to see if I could bring it out a little better. Hope you don't mind. You might have had one too many beers but this is a great picture anyway. Best things first. Don

I know all about the mad dash up to Keys view, having been late myself a couple times :-) The good news is that you can still get a great alien landscape such as this... It is fun to see your Joshua tree shots - makes me nostalgic for all times I've visited the park.

Hi Tom, Beautiful shot. It's not often I say that, but the pastel tones and warmth of the colours are fantastic.

The distance cue, as well as the tilted gradient in the sky are very nice, but I wonder what would've happened if you'd either selected a lower camera position, or taken a few steps back, capturing more of the boulders in front, and a slightly smaller strip of the sky. If that way you would've captured all boulders in stead of only cropping a few others, I think that would've created an even stronger element of depth.

Sometimes the dusk is even more beautiful than the sunset itself, as the last rays of sun still manage to create harsh contrasts, whereas the dusk casts a softer light. Very appealing shot.

The only thing I do find strange is that somehow, it looks a bit too soft (focus-wise). Not something I'd expect here.

Very good shot! It would surprise me, but this shot is bound to attract a whole lot of comments. It's very appealing, and looks inviting on the thumbnail too...

Cheers,

Hugo
