About Japanese trains have notices suggesting that people scrunch up to allow as many as possible to sit. This is how NOT to sit. Here again my "toy" camera lets me take a candid shot... although the highlights are almost entirely blown I decided to upload this one because I'll be interested in any tips on how to take this kind of shot. It's all new to me...

It's a great moment, very humorous. This is greatly helped by the expression on the man's face as well as his white-clad fellow passenger.

He has that expression: "I'm BIG man, need BIG legroom, want to read SERIOUS book" :)

She is thinking: why do wide boys always sit next to me?

I haven't any tips: you seem to be doing very well with the mobile.

Thanks for visiting, Stuart. I'm glad to hear there's going to be a mobile phone project. It has been a liberating experience for me to use this device, as despite obvious limitations, it freed me to take such "candid" pictures... something I'd never been able or willing to do before with conventional cameras.

Nice shot .. The girl on the left looks unhappy about her cell phone call, Mr. unhappy in the middle looks kinda grumpy about what he's reading and girl on the right looks kinda pissed at you .... Overall you have captured a rather unique unhappy photo ... lol. I sent a forum to the Site Admin and he is going to set up a Camera Phone Project.

No, no, you're right, Brad. I was talking about the same thing, on my phone it's for all the world like a plus (or minus) one or two stops--and you can see it lighten (or darken) the picture. There is also a "night scene" selection available, which is more like the other thing you were mentioning. My biggest beef is inconsistent focusing, not even consistent across the plane of a single photo! It's going back for the second time over that.

My phone camera is so low resolution I dont notice shadow noise much. it is all rather binary being mostly all noise in low light.

I wsnt talking about the low light boost function that comes on the cameras, all I have seen have an additional contrast adjustment. I agree that the phones are not competing with the high end cameras however, that phone of yours certainly takes better shots than some of the earlier digitals I have seen.

Yeah, Brad. I noticed that. The trade off is all that interesting coloured noise you then get in the shadow areas! I don't think cameras have much to fear from mobile phones just yet! But a great toy, right>

Roger, On all the Phone Cameras I have player with there is a brightness adjustment that you can use to adjust contrast to avoid the blown highlights.

Reminds me of an Isuzu Truck Add with 3 sumo guys - "not so squeezy!"

They're pretty relaxed, Richard. They seem to object to large SLRs more than small RFs, and least of all to mobile phones. It has been quite liberating for me, who never felt like poking even an RF in somebody's face, to be able to take candid photos like this.

Roger - Wouldn't it be ironic if the woman on the left was taking YOUR picture and it showed up on USEFILM? Is she unhappy with HER highlights? Cheers - JB

Hi Roger, I don't expect a perfectly exposure in such a shot, let alone if that shot is taken with a mobile phone cam. Still, the quality is still impressive. A good candid shot. Well captured!

Cheers,

Hugo

Your "public transportation" series has really been enjoyable. Do you think the phone camera allows you to take pictures of people more easily? The woman on the right seems very aware of what you're doing. How are the Japanese, in general, about having their pictures taken by strangers?

The lady on the right doesn't look too impressed, Roger!
Great candid!
Best regards, Chris
