Hi Sal, thanks for your comment... As to the sepia tones: there aren't any. This is the full colour version, as shot on film....:) The well lubricated stainless steel has this tone. The gears where brand new and unused...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Jeroen, I thought you would refer to the focus on your first comment. The softness was intentionally, but the scan made the effect stronger. I cannot disagree with you, as that's a matter of taste....;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo,

I made a remark on the first, well actually, I didn't make that remark, I kept it for myself at that moment...
Well, all three are very good, great idea, but....and maybe it's intentionally,....they lack a sharp, in-focus point IMHO. Was this your intention or do you disagree with me?

Regards,

Jeroen

Thanks for your comment, Emgy! I think you are right about the over exposed spot, I thought of cropping it off, but I don't think it would do the composition any justice.

Cheers,

Hugo

The zooming out, the slightly different angle, the rotation into a diagonal composition, all parts of an excellent idea to shows us more of this amazing mechanical work. I like it in every way except, maybe, for the almost over exposed part on top. I know that light can be very tricky on some new metals and that the white spot probably couldn't be avoided, in this case. I'm only mentioning this cause I think it's a shame and detracts a bit from the harmonious aestetics of this image.
Regardless this little particular, this is another superb shot and an excellent last addition to your Shift and Gear series.
Regards - Emgy

Too many comments for me to absorb today! I will just say that the combination of foreground and background defocus really brings out a feeling of mechanical complexity in this image.

Very intiguing photo Hugo. It has a great sense of machinery working away, the noise almost jumps from my screen. Beautiful tones

Hi Hugo,
This last picture resumes all. The angles used, the light, focus, colours... Wonderful series. Almost as good as "Me, Myself, and...". I liked the second line focus, interesting idea.
Great work.
Cheers

Hi Hugo,

I was expecting no less from the third of the series... The details look great and are combined with the lighting...

I agree with Richard and Tom, these pictures belong to the wall, and as Tom say this one will look great in the cover of a magazine...

You told well the story...

Congratulations!!!

Maria

i have to agree with richard. this series belongs on the wall. single frame, vertically. it would be right at home in my F1 wall ;^)

hugo, you've done it again. this one's much cleaner. it's not just the focus, a better scan perhaps? interesting how this image has increased tension but completes a much larger view/story told (or untold, depending on how you view it) by the series as a whole. wonderful! maybe you should send these to autosport. this one in particular would look great on the cover ;^)

take care,
tom

The final installment! I can imagine 3 prints on the wall to good effect. I like your approach of using ambient light with no flash and limited dof. The usual procedure would be to use flash, creating a valid, but very different look to the series. To me, your technique and the toning gives this series a kind of organic feeling.

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 4/21/2004
Hi Neil, thanks, that was exactly the intention. I tried to build up the tension in the triptych by zooming out with each one, and showing more of the function of the thing, trying to create the atmosphere and "paint the picture". I'm really glad it worked for you....;o)

I'll refrain from comments about cheese, this time...;o) Better to get that gear in motion than to have bees in the bonnet...;o) But ouch, if this is what the inside of your head looks like, it must hurt every time you wake up....

Cheers,

Hugo

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 4/21/2004
Hi Hugo, i prefer this one from the three you have posted. Why? well i think it has the most info, more tension, in the image. The lighting is very good and the focus also. It looks like the inside of my head. Greetings from the land of cheese with holes in it! Neil

Excellent Hugo, thankyou for your explanation above as I was thinking it would be an awfully big wrist watch with those cogs and gears ;-)

Hi Paolo, It was even easier.... This is the gear box of a le Mans car, I went to the workshop, where a couple of cars were completely disassembled for maintenance, including a few (four) brand new gearboxes. This series shows the details of one of them.

Cheers,

Hugo

This is really interesting Hugo!!!
I like the light which hit stright the gears without a great loss of details.
Elegant the construction following the diagonal and the focus exclusively pointed on this path.
Brilliant work!!
did you need of few wrenches to complete your work?
Really a cheap price for you my friend!!
Bravissimo!!

Hi Hugo..
one great light on this detail! one beautiful macro a lot "worked"... excuse the play on words, but very appeals to to the disposition in diagonal and the great DOF that the part of joint of the gear exalts! the colors are from "monochromium"...

cheers
roby
