Yes, the 1.4tc is a very good option. I can keep it on my 300 prime most of the time for wildlife. When shooting sports like auto racing or tennis, I am usually much better off without the TC, simply because for most situations I would be too close to use it.

They are great looking birds, but sometimes can be hard to get close to for decent images. You can always recognize them in flight by their distinctive pattern.
