Hey Roger! Long time no see! How've you been? How was Hong Kong? I've been living in the Pacific Northwest for the past year and a half. Quite a change after 20 years in Japan!
Excellent panorama!

OK Zeev, here goes. The equirectangular image used for panoramas has linear dimensions proportional the angle of deviation. So a 360 (around) by 180 (up & down) degree image is twice as wide as it is high. And there is really strange spreading of the image at the top and bottom. The zenith and nadir and spread out along the whole top and bottom edges of the image.
The Panini projection, while it still produces curved lines instead of straight ones, manages to keep verticals vertical, and to avoid the spatial distortion of people near the edges of ordinary wide-angle rectilinear projections. It's a compromise, but a good one. It was used by the Italian painters to record panoramic images that looked natural although they were actually covering far wider angles than could be rendered accurately using normal perspectives. Probably more than you wanted to know... But you DID ask...

Thank you, Keith. There is a lot of interesting detail that doesn't survive in this low definition image, and the larger panoramic image I posted didn't make it through the Usefilm filter, alas. One nice thing about 360-degree panoramas is you can choose the "center" afterwards to be where you like...

Thank you Anne. I know it would not appeal to everybody so it's nice to hear from those who like it...

Good to hear from you Keith. Today is impossible and tomorrow I have a hospital checkup. Are you still here in Tokyo on the 3rd? I will try to reach you by phone at the Hilton, my favourite Tokyo hotel. This is a backup in case I can't.

Hi Roger, long time since I came on here. Just wondering if you are still in Tokyo? I am here for a few days this week (Feb 2-6) on business. It would be great to meet up and chat. I'm at the Hilton in Shinjuku if you would like to get in touch.
