Absolutely stunning photo. Im curious though, how close were you and how much closed could you have gotten? If you were at the edge of the water, then NM. But generally I find that for shots like this, where there is great colour in the sky especially, I like to get very wide, about 18mm and then physically close the distance for composition. Granted, it will distort straight lines, but that can be to your advantage.

Doesn't the African sun do wonderful things to smoke! Lovely colours, especially with the little patch of blue on the top right contrasting with the red smoke.

I think it's a good composition... hard to give any advice since I wasn't there... :-) I like the look of the water, and of course those great vulcano smokes! Interesting!!
