About Controlled burns on the hill above Hout Bay here in South Africa. Sun was setting behind those hills, so this side was pretty dark even to the eye, never mind film.

What would your advice be for composing a scene like this? The smoke plume extened far too the left and quite a bit more up, too large for me to get in on film even at 28mm. Thanks and enjoy :)

Absolutely stunning photo. Im curious though, how close were you and how much closed could you have gotten?
If you were at the edge of the water, then NM. But generally I find that for shots like this, where there is great colour in the sky especially, I like to get very wide, about 18mm and then physically close the distance for composition. Granted, it will distort straight lines, but that can be to your advantage.

Great work!!

Doesn't the African sun do wonderful things to smoke! Lovely colours, especially with the little patch of blue on the top right contrasting with the red smoke.

I think it's a good composition... hard to give any advice since I wasn't there... :-) I like the look of the water, and of course those great vulcano smokes! Interesting!!
