Thanks Dave, To answer your question, the lens I use the 400mm F/4 DO Is wonderful, the 500mm F/4 is 10k and over 10lbs, the 600mm F/4 is 12k and even heavier, so hand holding is not a option. I used the 100-400L for years and still do, its also a wonderful lens for the price, with IS and a zoom that will never leave you too close to the action weighs 3.8lbs. I got a really good deal on the 400mm F/4 which with the new DO system has it weighing in at just about 4lbs and shorter then the 100-400 extended. for me this was a godsend a 400mm super tele, IS and light weight, able to use the 1.4 converter, so I have never looked back. there are other choices out there, the 400mm 5.6 non-Is takes some sharp photos, and is very light, but the lack of IS and being a 5.6 cannot except the canon 1.4X, was not a option for me as I do love canons Image Stablization. So If you look at The choices the 400 F/4 Is the best choice for a hand holding bird in flight shooter. the 100-400mm being the second and the 400mm 5.6 being the third. Thanks again and hope this helps..
Marcus.

Markus, I am frankly amazed at the quality of your bird images. One day when I have more time to spare I would like to try some of these, but at this point it ain't possible. Do you find the 400mm to be a better lens for the kind of panned images that I see in your portfolio? Although a 500 or 600 gets closer, I suspect they would be harder to do hand-held and still avoid clipping wingtips. With the 20D you get a 1.6 factor anyway, even without an extender. Do you mostly shoot from a blind, or can you get close just out in the open?

Thanks Gyorgy, The look or background effect is typically caused by the amount of blurring I do to a distracting background. The more I blur it the more that effect comes through that I even sometimes notice...
Take Care..

This is superb, as usual with you, Marcus. However it gives a strange impression as if it was cut and paste against the sky. Is it because of the 400 mm? Best, Gyorgy

Hi George, I still use my 100-400L very much Its a really sharp versitile lens that never leaves you stuck being too close to your subject. The 400mm 5.6 prime is maybe a slight bit sharper then the 100-400 at 400, but your always at 400 and being a 5.6 does not work with any tele converters and does not have IS like the 100-400.. there is a 500 buck price difference, but I would go with the zoom every time...

Beautiful capture. He is perfectly poised--almost sculptural. The feather details are spectacular.

All the best,

(Marcus--I'm shopping for a lens that will go to 400mm--zoom or prime. This one is out of my price range, though. The 400mm f5.6L and the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS are possibilities. Any suggestions?)
