Yes that is very true, If you shoot with the in camera settings set at parameter 1 I believe which has in camera sharpening and a saturation boost, I use parameter 2 or visa versa I can remember right now which has no camera enhancement, every thing is set for zero. then i do the sharpening and a bit of color adjustment myself, I dont use canons raw converter but the new one built into photoshops CS-2, and it works great, I do have some over shaprened pics in my portfolio but that is my doing.......
I also noticed that with the parameters set for in camera adustments I was getting softer images, once i change to no in camera adjustments I had shaper images even before I did anything to them, I only think they implemented that feature for the point and shoot crowd as they would get a sharp as you said sometimes over sharp contrasty image that they would not have to do any work on. I did have the same problem with my 10D so i change it as soon as i got it and it works great.. my brother shoots a 1ds MII and besides a much more accurate focusing system not much noticable image quality difference, you just have to be a bit more on your toes with the 20D, but at a 6k savings I am super happy with the 20 and the improvements over the 10D......

Marcus,

I've just been reading through the review of your camera on www.dpreview.com where the reviewer mentions the huge improvement to images achieved by the use of Canon's Digital Photo Professional RAW converter.

Have you tried this?

This is an extract from the review:

"Our only gripe if we were to isolate one would be that the EOS 20D's in-camera demosaicing / sharpening algorithms don't get the most out of the data delivered to them by the sensor. Close examination of JPEG's from the EOS 20D show us that the sharpening algorithms used are very similar to those in the PowerShot series of digital cameras. You can't deliver visibly more detail into the image (by increasing sharpening) without also making sharpening halos more visible. (Canon EOS Viewer Utility appears to use the identical processing / sharpening).

The flip side of this is the type of processing / sharpening used in the professional EOS-1D series of digital SLRs (and also in Canon's Digital Photo Professional RAW converter) which has the ability to sharpen the image without introducing halos (you just get crisp edges). When you see the difference between in-camera and shooting RAW and converting via DPP you realize that it's a pity Canon couldn't have implemented this more advanced processing / sharpening algorithm into the EOS 20D for in-camera produced JPEGs."

Even if the RAW converter is expensive your superb images will be well worth the expense.

Kind regards.

Martin

Thanks Jasmine, I do tend to give insect macros a good amount of USM as I feel if your gonna take the time to capture tiny insects I want to see every last detail :) A soft macro with a quick loss of DOF is IMO a boaring cliche' ......
More to come..

wonderful pic and perfect camera settings!! the secret for the macros is Hi F for best DOF, and low speed, i use the flas always.

I find it necessary to turn the sharpening right down when using flash and digital otherwise the image takes on a "Christmas Lights" look.

A more natural look can also be obtained by using a flash difuser. Not the one that Canon will sell you for loads of money. I use a polystyrene cup from the local take-way - just slot it over the flash head. It works much better than anything else to remove the sparkle from flash-filled macros. Also it doesn't matter if it gets lost.

Hi Marcus,

Something a little different from you. A great job on the fly with macro.
But, now the real challenge comes.... Let's see you capture one of these guys in flight! :)
