Weet je, normaal gesproken hou ik niet zo van extreme groothoeken. Maar je hebt het hier gebruikt om een extra dramatisch effect te krijgen en bovendien anders kreeg je waarschijnlijk niet alles op de foto, wat je wilde fotograferen.
(Ik hou niet zo van de vertekening van een extreme groothoek - maar dat is mijn probleem.)

Awesome in the fisheye view, Hugo. And the black and white tones look great, too. Interestingly enough, I spent many a time underneath this Lion King marquee when we took a high school band to NYC a few years ago. This was our rendezvous point.

Great idea to distort the lines, stops them looking like they're falling over and adds energy to the scene. Reminiscent of the iconic B&W photos of NYC in the 40's and 50's.

Hi Deniz, thanks. Yes, ISO 800 was the best option. I didn't have a tripod, so I had to shoot hand held. Any higher would only have increased the digital noise, and 800 allowed me a fairly decent shutterspeed...

Thanks for your comment. In answer to your question: yes, any fisheye has this type of (rounded) distortion, unless you are using an aspherical lens, such as the Nikon 12-24 f/4.

Hi Mindy, thanks for your comment. I didn't do much to this shot. It was taken with a really wide fish eye lens (focal lenght 10.5 mm, angle of view approximately 170 degrees). The lens creates this destorted image. I did convert it to black and white. Did that with a photo straight out of the camera. When you do that, the tones will be a bit flat, so I increased the contrast a bit. I then cropped it square and added the frame. That's it, not very difficult...:)

This really is an incredible shot. I'm struck by the sharpness of it, and the contrasts.
The fisheye certainly adds to the 'feel' of the scene, it's PERFECT! I would indeed be thrilled if I took this one.
Perfect composition, I'm wondering how on earth you managed to even get it from this angle.

oh wow, this is it! What a comeback, my friend. Bloody awesome perspective, and now I know what fish eyes are made for. My next NYC trip will definitely be accompanied by a fishy friend ;-)
the perspective makes the image. A mild pity that some of the lights are blown out. But I know that light problems VERY well from my NYC pictures ;-) Virtually impossible. Okay, you may do some aperture series =) (as a fake solution)

The DOF with a w/a always seems larger, it's easier to control, too. The only problem is, that a wide aperture also causes alot of aberations, that's also one of the reasons I converted them to B&W (yes, 'alas. Me too, Tom...;)) The primary reason for B&W is an aesthetical choice, though. I felt B&W fitted better with the mood and atmosphere of the city. (still do, btw...:)

Hi Paul, I always carry around too much gear. On this trip I brought a D100 with a 10.5mm f/2.8, a 50mm f/1,8, a 17-35mm f/2.8-3.5 and a 28-105, f/3.5-5.6, and on top of that a MF Yashica mat... Good excersise...:)

Ha Riny, With the 10.5 mm lens, you don't need t lie on the ground; besides, the approx 1.5 m you gain by doing so is irrelevant compared to the heights of those skyscrapers. Besides, the approximately 170 degree view angle you'll get with the fish eye captures about everyting...:)

Hi Hugo, Nice to see you back. Congrats on the award. You capture perfectly that dizzy feeling in NYC. I like the fact that you use the word 'corner' in the title but due to the fisheye and also the architecture there actually is no corner in the picture. Overall it has a very soft, round feeling which makes the atmosphere more 'human scale' and inviting rather than the more typical feeling of alienation and angularity you get in big cities.

Very rich photo, full of details, but they are not disturbing because they are part of the city life, I?m glad you converted it in BW, the lights and the dark areas create a strong and charming contrast, there is a bit of overexposure here and there, but I think it?s normal in a night shot, of course I like also the fisheye effect, very strong and curious. Heey Hugo, goed je weer terug gezien, ik heb je nog vaak opgezocht, maar steeds teleurstelling dat er niks prachtigs nieuws te bewonderen was!
Dit is een weer echt een prachtplaatje, de ombuiging in de foto vind ik echt heel mooi, B&W zorgt voor wat meer emotie in de foto, de hoge gebouwen zijn echt prachtig weer gegeven. Is het met een 'fisheye' lens genomen?

ps. Ik ben het met je eens over mijn foto, maar ik vond de kleuren zo mooi dat ik hem toch maar uploade, maar inderdaad waar het om draaid zit teveel naar benden. Maar zoals je misschien zag heb ik een nieuwe camera, (eindelijk) een analoog spiegelreflex. En ik vind het moeilijker dan ik had gedacht, moet echt 'opnieuw' leren fotograferen. Ik ben dan ook nog lang niet tevreden, maar het is wel een stuk leuker. Maar er moet voor mij nog flink wat geoefend worden wil ik zulke mooie foto;s gaan maken!
Hugo, het is goed je terug te zien op UF!

huge! very nice! congrats on the sc... very well deserved. i don't recall seeing this one before ;^) and so out of character for you too. b&w? et tu hugo? just kidding with you.
actually it seems to be a very good solution for the color fringing we noticed on this lens when wide open. i am amazed at the dof you can get with it even at f/2.8. i also like that you chose not to correct the perspective. the curved lines add that extra dynamism (tension?) to the scene. one of my favorites from you. although i should save that judgement until i see all 3 ;^) looking forward to it.

This is cool. Love the tallness of the buildings and the curve in them. Have just got a fisheye lens myself but haven't used it yet so getting lots of inspiration from photo's like this.

very nice picture,
the fisheye works perfectly here.
the contrast and lighting are very well balanced here.
I don't know exactly why, at the upper left part of the picture the writing "new victory" on a signboard pleased me very much.I think the reason is that it adds to the composition and balance it very well and when everything is curved to the same direction, this signboard is curved to another.
I like your picture a lot and congratulations for the award.

Excellent image.. it really captures the feeling of NYC... love the perspective that the fisheye gives..Even though the colors of the signs etc would be great, the b/w tones are perfect for this scene. So, how many lenses do you carry around with you...always worry about carrying too much stuff walking around the city :) great work and congrats on the SC award

Well, well. The man is busy with work for a while, then comes back with style!!
This is a dizzying view of something that feels like it should be familiar, but the fisheye and the upward view makes it so unfamiliar. This isn't how a city looks when I'm standing there, but it is exactly how it feels!
I like how the shutter speed freezes the action of the cars and people, but the wide open lens still allows the lights to glow like a slower speed would produce.
