Thanks for the encouragement, Margaret. Unfortunately my SLR is with the repairers for the next two or three weeks, so I'l be macro-deprived. On Saturday, when I went cherry-blossom viewing, there was a photo club, seven or eight photographers all with tiny tripods and huge zoom lenses laying at different angles all over the flower beds... I felt quite jealous!

Hope you are enjoying your macro lens, I think to start with a bright white flower is quite a hard start. Some flowers seem to lend themselves better to macro than others Margaret

Terrific first macro, Roger. Welcome to a whole other world. :) Love the detail and composition on this. Well done!
One tip: Sometimes the dof is so small that you really have pay attention to the angle. The plane of the film has to match the plane of the object, or parts will go out of focus, even at f22 and above.

Chris; this is what a new camera can do for you... I got an SLR (my first in 20 years) and it's opened up all sorts of doors (macros, fisheyes, telephotos, etc). I've been using RFs so much that I'd forgotten how useful SLRs could be! I still prefer to zoom with my feet, though, Frames? No, not a trend, more like a flash-in-the-pan.

John, I feel so reluctant to use frames that this is my first after nearly two years on Usefilm. It will probably be my last for a while, too. I appreciate the comment about keeping the image away from the edge, though. The petals weren't clipped in the original...

Wow! I'd never have thought this was a 'Williams' from the thumbnail!! Nice start to your macro career, Roger! You must have got pretty close. Superbly framed, too! Is this the start of a trend?! Best regards, Chris

Well done Roger. A word of caution though. I like your photographs alot and I'm not certain I want to give up image space for frame. Its not just the loss of frame pixels, you also need to leave a little room and not cut off parts.

Thank you. I have PSP 7 and it has 3 frame options, I like making my own but there are some cases where the pre-made ones are what I'm looking for. I'm anxious to see you next macro. Do forget the tripod it helps.

Thanks for the encouragement, Ellen. I used PaintShop Pro, V.9. It has a button for adding frames with a range of options. I think you can get lots of other frames, but I haven't been "into" frames at all. This really IS my first...

Well done on your first macro. When I got my first it was Christmas all over again. What program did you use for the frame? I'm looking for ones with mitered corners.

Yep, they are hard indeed. Nice first attempt, if you notice you have the petals at the top in focus, whilst those at the bottom are out. The trick is to get enough light to allow really deep dof, maybe two or more flash heads are needed in some cases. Keep trying though, as I said a good start.
