About And now for something different (again)... I've seen quite a few very impressive detail shots of a more clean and abstract nature than what I usually post on UF, but which I found very inspiring.

I've taken many of these shots, but don't consider them fit for uploading on UF, as they are of a more promotional purpose for presentations and flyers.

Still, having been inspired by John Griep, Lori Stitt, Verena Rentrop, Gerhard Hoogterp and a few others, I decided it was time to try and take my attempts at this kind of photography to a different level. Following Patrick Jacobson's suggestion, I added a frame.

PS work: Other than frame: None.

Actual camera settings:
ISO 200
Shutter speed: 1/640?
Aperture: f/4

All comments are, as usual, very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Groet, Ted

The interesting aspect here is the contrast between orange and warm light vs a net dark grey.
That's why you had to avoid any crop on the top : well done !!

hugo, just got back from a long stint at work and decided to check out what i've missed. upon opening your page, this image just jumped at me. i'll get around to the others soon, but i feel compelled to comment on this one. how very, very unusual for you. i don't think i could've picked this one out as one of yours as the style is very different. onwards....

what do i see? a chromed mechanical hand (very much in the style of the cop in T2) rising from the sludge wherein it was forged. knuckles glowing orange. fingers flexing for the first time as they emerge from a mercury bath.

when i open it, i notice it's not a newborn mechanical hand at all, and yet it is a baby. your "new" baby. congratulations are in order.... for your new citroen (how is she, btw?), for the incredible shot (which i have yet to figure out how you shot it), and for the SC. excellent work! i love this one and it's going in my favs list.

take care,
tom

Ahmet Baki Kocaballi   {K:13618} 11/16/2004
Hi Hugo,
actually,I thought like that because the lower saturation might increase the feeling of abstract by removing the characteristics of the singal lamp a bit more;however I have made some experiments with your work, and have seen that yours is the best,,

Baki

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 11/15/2004
Hi Baki, thanks for your comment. I didn't crop this photo; and it's basically straight out of the camera. IMO, it's the saturation of the signal light that adds the appeal to the photo. Obviously, the monitor setting might influence the appearance of this shot, but I'm curious to hear why you think a little less saturation could improve this image, and by how much...

Cheers,

Hugo

Ahmet Baki Kocaballi   {K:13618} 11/15/2004
Hi Hugo,
very nice detail capture, very clean design and photo quality, i also very like the original crop you did,, one suggestion could be a little bit less saturation on the orange color..
and congrast for SC

Wonderful composition. I like the way the blurred reflections lead to the bright orange light. To add to this there is also another one small tiny reflection on the right side. Looking from that angle these reflections make a nice arc aswell.

Excellent abstract.

Hi Hugo,

I?m honored, THIS is so good. You could expect I would love this one of course .
It?s a very strong combination, the yellow lights matching perfectly with the grey tones.
Not to mention the composition itself, the diagonal element and the use of sharpness and DOF.
It?s ALL great, beside a staff choice it sure is a JG choice. Congrats ;)

Hi Neil, Thanks for your comment! It's a detail of the signal lights on a 1973 Citroen DS (la Déesse, hence the title) shot form the right fender of the car upwards. About the DOF, I had an interesting discussion with CarlHeinz Bayer about this one. Please see the image I attached in my reply to him, it's practically the same shot, but with a wider DOF.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo,
Great shot. The tones are just perfect here. I think this shot does have a very 'commercial' side to it but I think it has a 'personal touch' even more. The way the reflected light appears again and again is too 'artsy' for a purely commercial shot. It has something deeper. But its definitely slick!

Great, great, great. It come as a surprise. The grey sky serves very well in this to make the light and its shinings jump out. The unusal angle is also very strong and dynamic.

Hi Hugo, i like this even though i don't know what it is :) A nice clean abstract. i could imagine with a little more DOF (you obviously had enough light) to increase the contrast more in the foreground to make it a little stronger, but that's only MHO :) I like the frame and congrats on the SC!
Best wishes Neil

Hi Hugo, this is almost cinematic - you seem to focus on the light as the car zooms away - has a feeling of urgency from the selective focus.

The different tones of grey with the intense gold have a stunning effect.

Very appealing photo.

Cheers, Leora

WOW Hugo!!

I am impressed! What an awesome AWESOME photograph you have come up with. VERY different for you! Your talent in this area has emerged, this is really GOOD! I love it.

It's ABSTRACT and should be viewed as such, not trying to think of 'what is it', etc...

Therefore, I need not say more because I feel that abstracts are a 'gut feeling'! You either know you really like it or you don't...usually strong feelings on way or the other.

I LIKE/LOVE it.
Lori :) :)

congrats on the recognition my friend!!!

Hi Hugo,

breaking the rules? widening the horizon? walking on unknown paths? thumbs up, my friend.

I find this one pretty amazing, mostly because of the "triple" reflections. the desatured look of the back and the foreground fits well together and gives the yellow lights some chances to shine. nice details on the metal.

the framing is a tad hard, but I think it fits to the grey scale look. minor thing for me: I definitely see the usage of blur filters in the background. there is a small diagonal frament line. but hey: that's a VERY minor thing.

DOF is fine by me. actually, would be great to see an even lower aperture value =)

alltogehter: welcome in the land of abstracts. have fun in this world and please share you views with us. =)

Take care,
Thilo

Hi C, The combination commercial shot and shallow DOF doesn't really fit, in general... Thanks for your comments... I'll definately have another go at such a theme.... But thank god that there are rules to be bend! (or broken for that matter...;)

Cheers,

H.

OK, if I have to pick one of the two, I go for the original one (also because of the rain drops).
The thing is, for this perfect catalog kind of image -and I mean that in a positive way-, a small DOF doesn't look right FOR ME. On the other hand; breaking the rules is a good thing!
Got you!!!

Hi Richard, considering that this is the signal light of a '73 Citroen DS, your reference to "Modern" is probably the best compliment you could've made to both the car and me... Thanks my friend!

Hi Ian, interesting thought, I hadn't looked at it that way, but now you mention it, I do see what you mean... It's the signal light of a '73 Citroen DS reflecting on the trunk and fender. Hope I didn't spoil your pondering now I've told you.... Thanks for your comment!

Cheers,

Hi C. Thanks for your comment. In response to your ambiguous feeling about the DOF, I attached a similar shot, taken from a slightly different angle and with a aperture of f/16 and a shutter speed 1/80'. I decided against using this shot (although I do find the reflection of the blue sky with the dark tones overhead an improvement) because of the clearly visible gas tank lid, which I find quite distracting. Wrong choice, maybe? What do you think?

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo!

Thanks for remembering me and popping by! ;-) Yes I know, it's about time to put something up but since I haven't posted for so long and I have taken millions of photos I just can't chose any right now. I probably wait a while.

This is a great, well composed and also technically perfect capture! Looks really interesting and eye catching. Kind of... hm... proper art... Now don't ask me what that is because I just made that word up! But I mean like... "clean". Like something that Gilette Razord could buy from you and have in their advertisings!

Very cool, very dynamic, good details, colors and angle. I have mixed emostions with the small DOF, but can't tell you really if I a bigger DOF would change my feelings; so I just swallow this idea;-)

Welcome and a great entree in this style of photography.

Gerhard Hoogterp   {K:4863} 11/12/2004
I was about to write about you getting on my turf..;-) But that seemed to be the idea.. Well, what can I say..
I'm always happy to inspire someone and I must say, it's a very nice shot. Quite abstract almost as I can see it's a car, but have difficulties finding which part/angle.
On the other side I do think that this one is still more for promotional material (or in a series on the wall of a showroom or office) than for hanging on the wall at home. Compared to your other work it lacks the human story. It's too smooth almost.

As for your comment on my latest b&w. thanks. Guess I tried to force myself to come up with something for a dpchallenge competition. Not a good idea..;) Oh well..

Gidday Hugo. Certainly something to enjoy. My first thought after the pizazz of the light before your clouds was disappointment the reflections aren't curving as a group. Stupid but there ya go. Then I tied to work out what on earth is going on in those reflections and that has taken a while and now I've stopped. I had a good time trying. It's a pretty space to be.

thanks so much, being quite proud of inspiration source for you my dear friend. If this shot is result of inspiring you, I should shot doing photos and start with a new hobby, being inspiration ;)

ok, ok, no I will not stop doing my own stuff.

This shot is a another great proof for me that chrome is a fantastic material for photography

Strong composition, light and multiply effect.

On one hand I'm curious about the subject, but on the other hand, I don't want to know it.

Thanks a lot
Take care
