About No complicated stuff this time. Just a series of spiders.... There have been quite a few spider photos on UF recently, and there's not much difference between them... None the less, I wonder what you'll think.

No PS rework in this shot (straight out of the camera). I tried to get a different angle at the spider, which was repairing it?s web, by taking it almost head on. The shallow DOF is a deliberate choice, to see if I could create a somewhat more dynamic shot.

Focal Lenght 105mm
Shutterspeed 1/60'
Aperture: f/8
Exposure comp. : +0.7 EV
ISO: 200 ASA
WhiteBalance: Cloudy
Flash Sync: Front curtain
Flash Comp: -0.3 EV

Just to make it clear, I do not like spiders either, but I do find them fascinating, as they have something creepy and frightning. Normally, I would've passed on such a shot, but a DSLR makes such a subject more accessible.

Constructive comments are, as usual, very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi James, thanks for your constructive comment; I always find that if someone points out the things that do not work is very helpful. Much appreciated!

Cheers,

Nice composition with the head-on view and the web in the upper right. I don't think the shallow DOF worked in this case because I don't find much of interest that's in focus.

Very good face focus here! Good spider photo but not as good as your neon-glowing-spider imo. Maybe because it's lacking that extra special feeling that gives it a personality or at least character.

I really hate these things, you know?
Yet I always find myself looking at the photos!
Must be a glutton for punishment:)
Great macro- gives me the willys....

It is good work Hugo but the shallow DOF is where the room for improvement is IMO. The eyes should have been sharp. Regards, Rob.

hugo, i dig it. not as much as the first one, but you don't get to see this perspective very often. i like the dof you used. well, moreso the idea you were pursuing. the blur on it's torso is a bit unsettling but maybe that's just me. i don't much "like" spiders either ;^) as to the crop, i think it's great as is. i think it would be a bit unbalanced if you dropped him even lower.

take care,
tom

Hi Hugo. At first I was going to say that I'd like a little more DOF, but the longer I look at this little creature the more I realize what you were trying to do. You've purposely focused attention on the head and created the feeling that it's coming closer. Very creepy.
If you don't stop posting wonderful images like this you may convince me to go digital. ; )
Best wishes, Kurt

Yes i agree they do have somthing creepy and frightning about them "even the small ones :)"
Very nice shot, i like how it's coming towards me in focus, but u lose that focus after that. Nice details and colors.
well done.

Hi Hugo,
That's something different, spidertalk.
I don't like them either, but they fascinate me too.
Shot Mine "Harry" yesterday in my garden. according to me he's always watching me, you can see it in his eyes.
Experiment with reversed 50mm attached to my G3.

Like your's as well.

Hi Hugo,

I liked more the first shot than this one... I my opinion it lacks sharpness, eventhough the composition is attractive to the eye...

Cheers,

Maria

Reading the above comments, I think that the DOF works very well as it gives the impression that the spider is literally an inch from the viewer's nose (and getting closer!)

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 10/10/2004
So was he really this way up or did you rotate the photo 180 degrees?
Only kidding, Hugo! ;-))
Another excellent shot ~ unless you're an arachnophobic!!
My compliments!
Kind regards, Chris

Very short DOF in this image! That is a colorful spider. You did manage to chatch him in a unique position. Not sure why, but that bit of blurred web at the upper left keeps distracting my attention.

Amit Saha Amit Saha   {K:3131} 10/10/2004
A very interesting angle for the spider...havent seen many at such an angle...the DOF is spot-on that gives the (out)of focus throughout the length of the spider...nice composition..waiting for the next in series.

Dear Hugo,

nightmare @ closeup ;-)

this time a bit more centered, at least in the vertical. DOF is very strong here... despite f/8. like the hinted web on the right.

I prefer the first one, if you would ask me ;-)

take care,
thilo

Hi Stephen, thanks for your comment, I think that's one of the good things about digital, it makes experimenting with less familiar subjects easier and more accessible, if you know what I mean.

Both Arwa and You have a point; I should've cropped a small strip off the bottom. But although we sometimes are our own worst critics, as you said in your reply, its also very plausible that we loose track of the finer details in our own work.... Guess that has been the case here...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Wonderful macro Hugo, I see the focus is on the spiders head and mouth - I try to go for the same too :-) Seeing that you do not like spiders I think you have done very well lol

If I was to nitpick, I would agree with Arwa and lose a little off the bottom to take the spider a little lower from center.

A Good photo Hugo:-)

Best wishes,
Steve

Very nice guy Hugo!! ;) I think the DOF is impressive, it gives me the idea to be very close to the subject and this makes the shot even more impressive, I like to see the attractive details and the beautiful colours, it?s certainly a very interesting subject and you made a very good work here, but spiders aren?t my favourite models, even if I took some shots for a friend (what we must do for friendship ;) ). Bye Max

Hi Arwa, thanks alot for your comment! I do agree with the crop on the bottom! Thanks for telling me, it's so easy to miss these things in your own photos.... Spot on, very good advice!

Hello Hugo!
Hope You are well!
Thanks for Your comments!

This is a very good macro. It has great dof and teriffic details!
The background is perfect and non-distracting and the image has a 3-d look to it which makes this even more dynamic!
Well done!
Take care My Friend and Have a good Week ahead!
My best..............JOHN

miraculous!
There r miracles around us everywhere! Picture like these made my believe in God stronger, hes there in all the small creatures in everyone of us! Photography is like meditation, a relief from lifes stress and uncertainties
This image my friend is like that!
I like the shallow dof - as u already know- it made me look more at his creepy head 7/7
tho it could be cropped just a tiny bit from the bottom

Dear Hugo, I understand your opinion about shallow dof here and in the one before giving somewhat dynamic mood to the shot, simply, it is my opinion, I do not like it :)
here in particular you sacrified the details on the remaining body of the spider; it seems to me a lost occasion :)

Michele Berti   {K:14921} 10/10/2004
hi Hugo, yes it's a nice macro but to me composition lack of something more, something which can drive my eyes on the photo. Best regards, Michele.
