Hi Hugo, believe it or not, when I started taking photographs (about 30 years ago) my parents-in-law had a summerhouse in Wijk aan zee, and yes I did the hooghovens several times at night.
Nice to see them back ;-)

Nice image. Good idea to "straighten" it, as I find it's best to have whatever is in the center of the image be straight up and down. It looks like the pipe that is in the center leans a bit, but the image still looks OK, probably because the tall stack on the right helps balance it.

Hi Hugo,
Never seen such an interesting image of an mundane factory edifice !
The shining lights from the bottom nicely lead the eye to the flowing smoke above.
Very nice indeed.
Regards, ken.
Note: I m visiting Amesterdam on 30th April and 1st May. Planning to visit the famous Kuekenhof gardens and Vangough museum.
Are free by chance, during those dates?. I am on my own - if you are avilable, perhaps you can join me for the visit to the gardens.

I do agree. The strait up and down smoke stack appears to lean into the photo... It's not always easy fitting three dimensions into two.......

Hi Pat, Funny to see your rework is exactly like I shot it, but I felt the difference in angle gave the perception of a tilted image, so I made the pipe and the blastfurnace tower converge on the vertical centerline. By doing so, I felt it would introduce a bit more balance in the composition. Well spotted, and thanks!
Cheers,
Hugo

This roars with the motion of the steam rolling from one stack over the other. It is such a rich, bright and crisp image compositionally, in color and in sharpness. I love how you capture the sparkle of lights in your night shots via the slower exposure. Pizzazz! Antonia

Kinda grainy but for ASA800 very good. Icouldn't help but wonder what it would look like if the smoke stack was plumb. What do you think?

Hi Biliana, thanks for your comments. About the polution, with out these plants, you wouldn't have a bike, nor a washing machine, nor an oven, as steel is still vital for our way of living, and has been so for ages...
These plants have become much cleaner, though, with this one probably the cleanest in Europe. The fumes you see don't necessarily imply polution, either, as it may well be water (steam).
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Lee, thanks for your comment. As safety measures are increased, it's almost impossible to go anywhere near a blastfurnace these days, let alone at night.... Luckily, this was an exception (nothing illegal going on here...;)

Hi Antonio, lowering the ISO setting would probably have resulted in a less grainy image, but as I didn't have time to set up my tripod to take this shot, I tried to keep the shutterspeed as short as possible. Hence that choice... I'll definately try it someday, though.
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Arwa, Thanks for your comment, The vertical format is because I couln't take it horizontally, without cropping off the pipes below, which I believe to be essential here. Besides, these blast furnaces are over 110m high...
The ISO setting is quite high, as this shot was taken at night, no flash (allowed). Besides, I didn't have a chance to set up my tripod, and I had to wedge the camera. In order to get anything out of this shot, I had to increase the sensitivity to get a reasonable shutterspeed given the conditions.
Cheers,
Hugo

Groeten,
Hugo

I thought I was the only one to try things like ultra-slow shutter speeds, but you've really brought it off with this one! Very dramatic, with that dark red reminding us of the furnaces that produce iron from ore. Good work, Hugo!

Groeten, Lex

I like that a lot! Great colors and a strong comp. Well, the noise, but what can you do under this conditions? But I can tell you with a 100asa film 30s shuuertine and maybe the help of a ND you would get an effect with the smoke that would knock your socks off. SWEET! CB

Hi Mauro, thanks for your comment. I had the white balance set on cloudy, as it was very cloudy. With all insustrial lights, the sky turned orange (not only in this shot, but in real life too) When I first saw the result, I remember thinking that it was almost as I remembered (took this shot last december) but seeing it again before uploading, my first thought was that I'd done something wrong with the white balnce...
I didn't use a tripod, but wedged the camerabetween some metal scrap lying around to hld it steady.
As to the title, it's a blast furnace, the first step in the steel making process, where you produce raw iron from ore and coal....:)
Cheers,
Hugo

What amazing photo, I have to search for one like this taken 2 months a go with sun set and the mountain behind it, but was a cement mill factory, what I like is the wonderful clear details of this unusual capture night shot, the "smoke" coming out of the chimney is showing that, it is working even at night, the dark black frame gave it an strong appearance and extra enhancement. Attractive work and subject. Regards.Saeed

Excellent industrial shot, Hugo! Probably taken in a windy night, the steam's flow pictures, together with the light that hits it, a very nice shape that seems to convolve the structure behind. I like the contrast with the other steam at the bottom that, protected from the wind, has a totally different shape. Very pleasant natural feeling watching at it!
Best regards, Paolo

This is very powerful, made moreso by the slow shutter speed emphasizing the motion of the steam. Very judicious exposure works well.

Hi hugo! The warm golden color are the main striking element in this shot...because its only the first part we don?t know yet where are you going with this new series, im not in favor of the composition it could have been a little but better, why did u choose to take it vertically instead of horizontally with the main pipe on the third quarter...but then it would have been more typical wouldn?t it? The exposure is excellent! may I ask you just for the sake of learning why did u increase the ISO? just to get the grain or is there some other reason? lol too many questions :P i wont rate this image till i see the rest of the series :)

The framing works perfectly for this shot. It is very industrial-age with all that power and drive and energy! The toning enhances the mood, making it seem a little foreign and unapproachable, even dangerous.
I notice that despite the absence of a human or other living figure in the image, it feels quite dynamic and thriving. Perhaps your wise choice of a slow shutter speed allowed the steam to provide a sense of movement to support the dynamic mood.
I feel like I'm standing there, but I'm a little afraid to get any closer!
