I think B&W sure is a good alternative but I rather liked the faded tones of the gangwalk and the bridge head. Per attached the B&W version, see for your self; purely personal, of course! See for yourself...:)

The fisheye are doing it“s work well here and the blue sky as well. In my opinion i had not included the streetlamp, i had only let the bridge and the "wires" make this capture. But i find this amazing - as so much of your work!

Yes, Hugo, I have been gone awhile like you. Maybe a little burnout or boredom with the usefilm site, but I don't see anything any better out there so I suppose I will keep returning.
The challenge of having a fisheye is to find something to do with it that results in an image that is not trite and utilizes the lens's unique perspective. I think you have done well here. This shows me a view of the bridge (an often photographed bridge) that I have not seen before. The engineering form lends itself to the symmetrical treatment.

Interesting thought about the shadow in the decking, and you may have a point. My first reaction was that a different angle of the sun would've unbalanced the photo, as the shadow would primarily overcast one half of the bridge, but then again, that area would've been relatively small.
I'd prefer the shadow to be slightly slanted to the left, adding another diagonal and countering the effect of the lamp post, but looking at the orientation of the Brooklyn bridge, I think that's technically not possible.

Hi Michael, Nuthin'wrong with a B&W bias...:) And, believe me, you DON'T Suck! The dull tones and contrasts are genuine; It was a very cold but crystal clear day in March when I took this shot, and the faded tones are exactly as I remember them. I don't think it has anything to do with the lense; I obtained some very well saturated results with it, too. Thanks for your comment and thoughs, as always, much appreciated.

Hi Roger, I quite agree. I managed to remove most of the aberations using Nikon Capture Editor, which works fine, as does a very small aperture (f/20 in this case) If you have any other methods in how to remove the aberations, I'm very intrigued. I've read more about this in a Photoshop Users' magazine, but I can't find the article any more. I think I remember it had something to do with tweaking the image in LAB colour.... I'll send you an email later.

Hi Petal, I agree with you, in many cases the fish-eye lens is abundantly used. But the 10.5 mm has its uses. What I like about it (an why I think the fish-eye is useful in such a shot) is exactly what you described. The bridge is no longer the primary subject, it's the spiderweb of suspension cables and wires against the sky. I do believe it takes a well known sight out of perspective and places it into an entirely new light of day...

Yeah - I suck. The B + W version is great and the graphic presentation of dark and light really pops well in the B&W version - this is one of those cases where I put my face in my hands and sob realizing that I have B 'n W bias...

Well, Hugo, you know my love of fisheye lenses... and this is a masterly use of the special effect which so easily becomes a cliche. No cliche here! The colour aberration of the 10.5mm Nikon lens is atypical, and cannot be completely corrected by the standard PhotoShop action that does so well with the more noral aberration of the Sigma fisheye... However, it CAN be removed; write me if you are interested in learning how (it would let you use more colour!) I don't have the lens but I read of the technique... Fabulous shot!!! Normally I'm not a big fan of fish-eye shots... they are usually a bit 'over the top', but in this case it enhances the view and works...!!!! I think that's because of the openness of the image (it's mostly sky and wires). Great view, colors and clarity... excellent composition... well captured!!!

excellent composition, architecture and wideangle is my favourite combination, nothing like those distorted lines nad increased hights... I once did read somewhere that fisheye lenses are only used time to time, and you get tired quickly of them, well i haven't and shots like this one remind me why.
...The only thing that slightly 'annoys' me, is the shadow in the decking, as it divides the image vertically in two, if the decking wasn't with the shadow both sides will marry better. Small detail though, great photo.

Hi Sal, Al definitely got it right. And I think I may have reacted too hastily.
On the wide angle question, I have some thoughts, but I'll let you decide on the wisdom, OK?
I have the 10.5mm fish eye, as well as the Nikon 12-24 f/4 aspherical. I do like both, mainly because their uses vary so much.
For architectural photos, I rather like the 10.5 fish eye, as the lens distortion takes things completely out of perspective. For instance, compare your NYC skyline (http://www.usefilm.com/image/991601.html) with the one I took using the 10.5 (http://www.usefilm.com/image/882304.html) Both shots are taken from (if I'm correct in assessing your shot) the Empire state, but both are completely different.
The good thing with the 10.5 fish eye is that it distorts equally in all directions, wheras the 12-24 aspherical has a more noticeable distortion towards the side edges, but creates a more "normal"view (overall).
If you plan to shoot a lot in concised spaces (I concider the avenues and streets in NYC fairly concised, and you're pursueing the more radical approach to street photography for example, I'd definitely recommend the 10.5. But for shooting landscapes or already curved surfaces (objects in which the curvature creates a part of the subject - take people and portraits for example) a fish eye is a no-go, unless you want to create a carricatural type of portrait. I wouldn't dream of using a fish eye, and switch to my aspherical.
Even though the aspherical lense is more suitable for (group) portraits, it does stretch out the bodies on the side edges a bit, and weird enough, I still have to pay alot of attention to the top and bottom side of the frame not to cut off heads and feet.
One of the issues with the 10.5 is, that you need to shoot with a very small aperture in order to prevent tonal aberations in the corners. This small aperture does affect the shutter speed. It's one of the reasons I decided to convert quite a few of my first shots with the 10.5 to Black and White, as you don't notice the aberations if you don't have any hues in the photo...:)
Bottom line is, decide on the use for the lens prior to buying it. A quick browse through your portfolio makes me suggest to opt for the aspherical, but the fish eye will open new areas and approaches of photography.

This has so much S P A C E contained within it..fantastic. One struggles sometimes with images that are not perfectly symetrical but then what makes this shot work for me is the eyes need to constantly search around the image. There is so much to see...excellent height also..
