You have many fine images in your portfolio and it hard to choose one to leave a comment or two; most have excellent critiques - all I can add a few extra words.
This caught my attention as I myself is a minimalist; simplicity and fewer colours with a clever comp teams well with title and interesting info.
It has an atmosphere of a suspense/tension with climax. If holding chain was loose/slack the effect would not have been impactful- as is- it's got the top effect.
Excellent work.
best regards.

Lovely abstract Hugo. What I really like is the intense reds turning into almost pure white. The chain gives it much needed perspective and info on the surrounds and is essential to this superb composition. Very well taken and presented. Regards.

1600*c turned into abstract work, the use of the foreground "chain" accommodate and break through the strong colour cast, the presentation and its orientation enhance the whole composition.

Hi Hugo,

First I thought: Boy, that's different and not Hugo ;-) Second I think this IS Hugo with the different shapes and forms and the clever silhouettes. I like the way you placed the subject into the frame. the passepartout is perfect.

best wishes,
Thilo

Hello Hugo, thanks a lot for visiting my usefilm site and leaving your comment + question. I don't know if it was my finger or if it lens-flare. I decide, it belongs to the picture. ;)

This is a fantastic shot. I love the warm color by the light of the lantern and the silhouette of the chain. It creates a wonderful atmosphere.

Please enjoy your Monday evening and have a great week.

Best regards from Germany, Jens. :)

Hi Randy, I quite agree, thanks for your feedback. This one is to be seen as an intermezzo within this series, separating nr. one and three (still to be uploaded). Just a try to see if it works...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Ina, thanks for your elaborate feedback, once again.... This photo is a kind of intermezzo between the previous one and the one to be uploaded; different approach, different style, yet the same feel (i hope)...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 1/30/2006
Hi Max,, thanks for the feedback, especially on the frame. I always struggle with frames too. I copy pasted a segment out of my reply to Jude in the previous one explaining my deliberations"

" think the white background of UF is not really suitable for a border-less image. I've used this similar approach in black too, but found that both to "standard" as well as too heavy. Yet, I felt the type of image needed something heavy, dark and (well, yes, breaking my own views here - ) intrusive.

I do believe there's a difference between photos published on the net and images in print to put above the couch . A good framing should compliment the photo, and not clash with it. At times, it's better not to use a frame. If I'd were to print this one, and put in a frame, I think I'd opt for something entirely different.

In this case, I choose this type of unorthodox border, sampled out of the meridian of the tones. To me, it fits, but that's totally subjective."

I know you're not "very friendly with them", but that's why I appreciate it...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks, Jeanette...:) I think if I didn't use the tilt, the image would've become rather static, don't you think?

Thanks for the feedback,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi JC,

Thanks for your feedback. I see your point, but as far as I can't remember, that would've prevented me from creating this rather graphical lay out and the rotated symmetry in this photo. See what I mean?

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Mireille, likewise - I appreciate your feedback too. Thanks for your comment on the frame;o that's always something I struggled with (see also my explanation to Jude in the previous one.)

Cheers,

This was a surprise, I expexted the series would be more along the lines of your 'From Ore to Iron' series. But it's a nice surprise, a very good abstract, hot to the touch. everyone has mentioned what I would say about it. now I'm real curious how this series will finish up.

Hugo! Dante would be proud. The color and DOF here are really special, and the unusual angle inscribed in this frame is nice.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 1/30/2006
Excellent abstract Hugo! The heat is tangible, the gradations from dark orange to bright white are perfect, no streaking, no halos and no hot spots (pun intended!) - The chain adds that touch of reality over the abstract heat square, and its angle, as well as the angle of the heat square are great, making the composition dynamic. Although I'm not big on frames, I like the white pinstripe, I think it's a great complement to the dark corners, and seems like a hot wire (if we read the hot temperature by color). The maroon frame is consistent with the other piece, making it part of the series, I think it's very succesful. This one is more powerful as a composition than the first, although the first has more details and journalistic content. Very strong and dramatic! Best regards, Ina

Hi Hugo, I like the simplicity, the strength and the colors of the photo, also the way you composed it is very good, an impressive image from a hard reality , but it looks like a beautiful abstract. Not sure about the brown frame around, but you known I’m not very friendly with them ;) Bye, Max

A great presentation youdid her. I like the brown frame for the orange and black. Graphical shot and i like the triangles you have in every corner .... not straight on here, a good alternative which is much better too. :)

Hi Hugo,

Superb shot, the heat is absolutely tangible. I like the chain, as silhouet breaking the frame very well. I'm not so sure the large part in the chain should include both the stream of molten iron as well as the orange sides (I guess they're the sides) Moving to the right a bit would've broken the diagonal symmetry, though. I like this one, neat, clean shot, and a very powerful one at that...

Bye,

JC.
