About The "Schuttevaer" race is an annual event. It consists of an enduring triathlon of sailing, cycling and running. The sailing race take the fleet of yachts through the sluices of Kornwerderzand, each of them trying to exit the harbour heads ahead of the other. Spinackers are hoisted when the sluice doors open, and the field rushes out through the narrow opening, creating some spectacular, and unusual views.

Actual camera settings: f11, 1/2500' @ 400 ASA -0,5 EV & 400 ISO. Zoom 400 mm, with monopod. This image is slightly cropped and Neat Image noise reduction is applied. The DOF is due to the Telezoom; The objects are further apart than they appear. The colours and levels are otherwise untouched.

Excellent shot Hugo with nice colors too. Very good this one too and I can say I am very impressive about the colors when I see this ... 1/2500??????? with a pretty small aperture of f11. Really impressive!

Excellent picture, nice color,action,composition.
By the way, next week our portuguese flag will stay there. Spanish and britons already are at home, next shall be the Orange. But if we loose- a game is a game- I see no reason to keep out the flag.

Good capture Hugo.
I so much love the boat shots, I live in the middle of the us and have nothing like this around me, maybe I will have to check the mountain lakes.
These sailboats are so full of color and make for a excellent subject.
I'm not sure what the silhouette is on the right side..a building maybe..
none the less a very good capture.
My complements.

O.K. .. Hugo ..... I'm not going to fall in line like the rest ...... From now on .. i want you to forget your monopod and 150m away ..and rent a small boat .. get your butt to that grassy knoll/rocks ... and show me some boats .. hulls .... crew. For all i know .. they(boats) are on wheels and are skimming across the "zee" .. I want to see boats..water...sails straining. ... ok my friend .. lololololo......Otherwise .. it's a not bad photo. lololo.

Warm Regards ...... Bill

Wonderful, colorful composition. How did you get those boats to pose in exactly the right way, with two sets of sails bright in the sun and the others providing a subdued background?

This has to be a unique sailboat race! T might be rather tight to navigate through the sluice.

Hi Biliana, I'm not getting closer to the pier... I was about 150 m away, and had to use a monopod to prevent my 400 mm lens at full zoom to stop shaking in the gusty wind. Thanks for your comment, as always very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

great end of the series, Hugo. lots of action. It's a great side effect that the sails have differences in the white. And the bright lighthouse brings in some more tension. Just one thing: chronologically, this must be first in series, right?

cheers, thilo

This is also very, very beautiful.I like all about this shot, the colours ,the Spinnakers, the action, the feeling. And I like your "Yacht" ,you usually race with very much!I always have "I am sailing"(is it Rod Stuart?) in my mind, when I look at these series.
Regards,Ursula

A wonderful moment chosen, I like the masts and the warning light all vertical elements fit perfectly with the rectangular image, the colourful elements a neutral contrast with surrounding scene, I love to see a single sail boat as dominant solo subject, though the best in the series, superb, Saeed

Hi Hugo, a nice way to round off this triptych and for me the best in this series. Nice side lighting and you've done a good job of holding it steady with the monopod in the wind. Nice work!
Best wishes - Neil

Hi Hugo,

Very nice photograph, this spot has rewarded you well! The two colorful sails and the red in the foreground make this image for me. Fantastic balance of reds....of course I know you arranged this ahead of time!! LOL

I sure don't see anything I can get 'nitpicky' over, it's just a great photograph!!
Very nice capture, Hugo! I like this one the best.
Lori :)

I agree with others...this is defintely the best in the series...its much more dynamic & vibrant colors...gives a more detailed picture of whats happening...

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 6/14/2004
To me, this one is the stronger photo of the three. In a way it makes the other two a bit redundant. I like the added elements of the buoy, the "lighthouse", and that we get to see more of the boat entering the turn. Good ray of light breaking in there as well when the background is quite dark.

I like this image best in your series, it is very dynamic, it gives a good impression of the sailor's troubles in getting out of the harbour first. The buouy in the front is a nice detail.
