About The same concept as the previous one.

This is a full frame, uncropped, unedited photo from the first series I shot with the Lensbaby in The mudstone caterpillars near Zabriskie Point, Death Valley. This photo is not about the landscape, though....

Thanks for your extremely useful feedback on the previous one. I've taken it into account, and I've changed the sequence accordingly, to a slightly less extreme photo. Once again, your feedback is very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Andre, good to hear from you, and thanks for your comment. I know about that film, but haven't seen it yet. Your comment is spot on, that's exactly what I wanted to achieve; The film in mind is Fear and Loathing Las Vegas, a completely uncomfortable film.

Cheers,

Hugo

A very interesting set of images from Zabriskie Point! As you say, this is not really about the landscape so much as you are using the landscape for an elaborate prop. This type of landscape is wonderful for creating an isolated, all alone feeling in an image.
I vaguely remember a film in the early 70's or late 60's by Antonioni (sp) called Zabriskie Point.

Hi Dave, Death Valley is an awesome place, After having first seen the DV photos by Tom Rumland, I just knew I had to go there myself to really get a grasp of this remote, forbidding place... And it triggered my passion for the other NP's I've visited consequently. The ruggedness and natural beauty is something we don't get that much in this part of the world...

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Definitely not about the landscape. Very interesting effect, I'll have to read on and see what you are talking about ("Lensbaby").

Appreciate your shooting the Death Valley. I've been tempted to check it out one of these days and I'm glad to see what there is to see.

Best,
Dave

Incredible landscape! The blurred edges really make this dream like or your person is deep in thought. Breathtaking place!

Looking forward to yours!

Hey Hugo,

I really like this one a lot...I've got to get a Lensbaby! That thing is relly cool. This shot comes close to representing what it feels like to be there. Sorry I haven't had a chance to post yet, but it will happen.

Hi Rashed, I feel privileged to receive such an honest critique from you. I'll work on the contrast and saturation of the previous one. And you are right, I didn't take care of that yet, as both these images are almost straight out of the camera. I posted these photos to get the feedback on what to change and on the lensbaby effect only...

Much appreciated,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Mohammad, thank you very much for your elaborate feedback. Exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for when I posted thi photo. I agree with the anchor and the excessive blur; I haven't post-processed this photo properly, yet. This series of three is a selection from the first shots I've taken with the lensbaby. I didn't really know what to expect until I uploaded them to my computer when I got home. What you see here is basically straight out of the camera. I decided to upload them virtually untouched, as I wanted to receive the feedback on the whole image. I think I'll change the composition a bit, probably preserving the aspect ratio, but with less blur on the right side.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

way better IMHO than the first one. The reduced babies effect, the golden cut and the reduced threat by nature makes this image special.

good one!

Well, I think the Lensbaby has done its function here and the limited zone focus did prove itself in this image much more than the previous one. Again this one has much better contrast and color saturations which obviously you did not take care of in the previous image. After I did not come here searching for a head of needle to critique but to say it’s a good work.

Dear Hugo,
Hi, it's a very impressive image, with a full sense of motion in each part: the main subject in the Left Golden Point, and is sharp enough to make the visitor think about it. but it has a wrong anchor just like my Old Look as you told me.
Maybe there is too much blur on right side but it holds eyes on right side and won't let it go!
There is a very good effect of illusion on sizes. the Human and mounts are not comparable in size and it looks the man is huge, or he is inside of organs and these are something like Muscles!
The Bump detail of mounts is superb and make this photo a very good piece of work!
Very best for you,
Mohammad

Hi Paolo, what an amazing new insight, he? A long time ago, people thought the earth was the center of the universe, and I guess I have just proven beyond reasonable doubt that that's not true; This man is the center of the universe, as the earth revolves around him, and not around the sun...

Thanks for your comment, much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

I think I would crop some off the right side where it is just a flat blur rather than the blurred lines closer to the man, I think that would heighten the slipping away effect. As Joel says, the blues need a little work but overall the colours are strong and add to the image.

Very differnt from the first one and more successful IMO Hugo. I like the use of colour, it gives more impact, the tighter crop too place more emphasis on the figure and the "sliding away" feeling Chelsea describes actually adds a dynamic alelment and creates the impression that this was shot out of a helicopter, pulling away from the scene. Great one!

Wow Rina, you were so right. I have seen that portfolio before, and didn't make the connection w/ the lensbaby. She has a style very much like my own (abstract), so it was very nice to see! I guess there's two way to go w/ the lens baby. You do what Hugo has done so amazingly well, and make the real world look like a miniature, or you go for the abstract bent look at every day life. Both, are a fantastic alternate avenue for photography!

thanks Rina, and thank you Hugo for your amazing images to push me off the rails of straight shooting ;)

cheers,

Hi Hugo
A very interesting landscape which is "broken" by the person which is a good detail because it shows the size of the place. I think I would have prefered it to be clear all over, but a nice shot indeed:-)
Thank you for commenting so well on my icephoto! It´s nice getting some hints in order to improve one´s photos! I can imagine that you also look for Spring and all the beautiful tulips in Holland:-)
Best wishes,

Hi Hugo & Joel, this isn't a critique but just thought this may be of interest to you both. Mel Brackstone: http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/99370.html has been working with a lensbaby for a while and has some shots in her portfolio worth taking a peek at. She puts the lens to some pretty cool uses...

Cheers to you both!

Hi Hugo! I try to avoid CC images, as I´m not qualified to give constructive comments, but just wanted to tell you that I think this one has a greater impact than the previous one. I feel like sitting in a helicopter :) Cool stuff!

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 3/14/2006
Hi Joel, The lensbaby is attached directly to the body (so get the one with the proper mount (in your case the canon one, I figure....:) The thing that amazed me is how light strong that baby is.

I did find it a bit more difficult to get used to, though, but it's definitely money well spent!

As to PS tweaking, I don't consider it tweaking if it's kept to manipulations that could also take place by a skilled person in a darkroom; replacing skies, editing in bears and such could still be considered cheating, but then again, there's a market for that too, and that doesn't say anything about the quality of an image... It's just no longer a photograph, but more of a digigraph, I guess...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo,

Straight out of the camera.. that's amazing!! So did you use the lensbaby on it's own (using it's optics) ? ....so impressed by that little lens!
I admire the fact that you didn't do anything to these images before uploading. It took me years to get over the fact that manipulation in PS is cheating. ..it's not.. Of course, it doesn't help that I work for a visual effects company.. all images look fake to me :)

well done! ...my other mozilla tab has the the lensbaby order screen up ;)

cheers,
-Joel

Hi Joel, thanks for the feedback! Excellent comment (and marked as such)

There seems to be a slight misunderstanding, there is no cropped version. I added it to the about as quite a few people suggested one with the previous, more or less similar photo I uploaded.

As to the curve adjustment, I haven't really started post processing these images yet. This series is a selection from the first shots I've taken with the lensbaby. I didn't really know what to expect until I uploaded them to my computer when I got home. What you see here is basically straight out of the camera. I decided to upload them virtually untouched, as I wanted to receive the feedback on the whole. Great little device, that Lensbaby. I've only just begun exploring it's capacities... The way the aperture ring is literally levitated above the lens using the three magnets is a very creative design, Love the ease that feature.

I do agree with your suggestions, though, and I'll definitely follow that approach.

Cheers,

Hugo

Yeah!! Proof that the lensbaby works!

Hugo, this is brilliant! I *love* tilt shift photography, and have been thinking of getting the new lensbaby for some time. I love the look that you've captured here, and the compositon suits the lens distortion perfectly with the person on the left. I have not seen the crop, but I can say that I love this wide, full distorted view. What I like most, is that your image takes on the life of an abstract painting.

I feel that your low blue tones are a bit strong here, and sending the shadows into hard blue. Have you attemtped a curve in PS to pull the blue just out of the bottom end?

Great image!!! Well done!

cheers,
-Joel

Hi Chels, Well put! Know the film Fear and Loathing Las Vegas? I tried to capture the feeling I get when watching that film. And yes, the sudden movement out of an otherwise solidly situated subject is very close to how I feel when whatching that film...:) (or when I'm really, really drunk, of course)

Hi Giulio, thanks for the feedback. As to the effect, it has been created with a Lensbaby, and you're looking at the original version. It's the lens that created it.

The atmosphere I tried to create is the feeling of disgust and revolt I get when watching the film Fear and Loathing Las Vegas. Apparently, that didn't work too well in this case, heh?

Cheers,

Hugo

I think that this is a great composition, with many diffucltys and a great sense of space and perspective...
The man is just in the right place, near the corner where all the mountains lines converge. The orange sweatshirt help us to see him in the middle of all this spectacular natural lines...
The only think that i'm not so shure is the graduated focus effect.. For me it give anything to the shot, but it steal something.
I'd really like to see the shot in his original version, without effects, 'cause I still think tha this is a great shot...

Chelsea Burke   {K:5750} 3/14/2006
Nice exposure, I really like the figure with the shadow, overall composition is good...but I find that out of focus on the side and bottom really distracting. It's like half the image is just sliding away. It creates a sudden movement out of an otherwise solidly situated subject, makes me dizzy looking at it.
