Incredible definitely deserves as award...the sheen from the light hitting the wet pavement is wonderful, the architecture very very well taken and the simplicity of the one lone person who appears almost to be wearing the umbrella is wonderful...love this...very well done and thanks to Randy mentioning it as deserving an award I got to see it too...awesome Hugo...:):)Linda

Checking recent comments led me to this piece of yours I have not viewed previously, and I have to agree with Mohamed...an exceptional capture. Great patina to it - love these tones that together with tucked tight umbrella accentuate the unpleasentness of the day. A perfect placement of the individual, who appears to be in no lack of speed to escape the elements, and has quickly managed to almost escape the frame.
OK, one little pick,their appears to be a slight slant to the image. The pillar on the right seems straight, and slant seems more notticeable as you work your way left, but just a slight thing.
(thanks for your comments,you say you'll be in Seattle. If it's your first time, you will find many great photo opportunities, particularily with your vision. I live near Tacoma, about 30 miles south)

Hi Hugo,
I'll join the queue...You have found yourself in front of a fantastic photo-opportunity, and you perfectly grabbed it. Reading the comments above, it seems like there is some agreement on the fact you might have missed her "decisive moment" by a few istants. I honestly think it is just about right: the not so obvious inclination of the umbrella perfectly fits the picture, adding some contrast without distracting. I tend to agree with emgy, instead, on the balance: a pity some detail of the reflections on the pavement in the square - anyway, the overall result is absolutely stunning! Truly a great image.

You're right about your flowers :), but that doesn't count for the rest of your subjects.
As an Abstract fan I like your colorful shells serie, and this one of cource, beautiful moody.
Think Emgy is right about the cropping, but that's just a detail.
The picture itself is amazing and very well seen.

Hi Emgy, Very good point! I see no harm in cropping either, and I'm glad you did (crop it). That's exactly what we are here for: to learn, not only from our mistakes, but also from the opinions of others.
I agree that placing the woman below the horizontal centerline does make the photo more balanced. I had to scroll up and down several times to actually see what you had changed (before reading your comment / explanation), but there was something in your version that makes it "tick" more. As it balances the composition it leaves everything else intact, Thanks for showing!

I think you captured a great moment here. I like a lot the sight of the building in typical oriental style and a wet square in one and the same photo. An unusual combination, even considering that it rains everywhere afterall. What I like even more is the presence of the hastily walking lady sheltering under her umbrella, as I think it makes the image lively and adds some dynamism to it. Although I agree with many other comments about the placing of the person not being optimal, I realize that, when you took the shot, you had no time for considerations about it. Besides, the placement far left doesn't bother me at all (isn't it amazing how opinions can differ?). What I don't like much is only the fact that the woman is in the upper half of the image. However, this isn't a big deal either. Cropping a little part of the bottom would place her further down and make the composition more balanced, even if it means sacrifying some of the beautiful pattern of the square's pavement. Please check my version and let me know what you think. I don't see any harm in cropping, but maybe you do and I may have overseen some important detail.
Having said all this, dear Hugo, the last thing I'd like you to know is that to me, the charm of this photo goes far beyond than the composition. I's all in the softness of the colours, the mood and the natural look.

I like the reflection of the building in the wet tiles, reminds me of the fact that sunny weather is not necessarily the best circumstance to make interesting photos...
The figure with the umbrella makes a good point of attraction. There were some comments on the off-centered position of the figure in the frame. I do not consider this position bad, I think if the figure would have been more in the middle it would have served as the only point of attraction. Now that it is positioned near the side of the frame, it emphasizes the reflections on the square, and the emptiness of it (which is nice, I believe).

Allow me to put this one into my FAV's for it's crushing power... I would use the term "tension" ;-) but I can't use it like you do! I almost can ear the silence, broken by the footsteps and those typicall "songs" on the top of the roof... Maybe this is "tension", as you call it! Whatever! This is one of your best to me!

Just soooooo beautiful! Since it's not pin sharp, it feels a little bit like a painting, but that's not negative IMO, because this softness really gives a wonderful mood! Very good composition and beautiful glossiness in the wet ground. I think it's super!

I must tell you that when I was out photographing flowers at an arboretum last week, YOU came into my mind...now I'm paranoid about photographing flowers!!

Oh I LOVE this image Hugo!! I absolutely LOVE the colors, soft and delicate. Such a good 'mood', the reflections being soft blues and earth tones, just BEAUTIFUL! So well done, with only part of the building shown. The person with umbrella....everything in this image is perfect!

hugo, excellent capture! to me, the thumbnail suggested an ice skating rink. this was made increasingly odd due to the mosque in the background. this in itself makes you curious enough to open it up. and hey! it still looks like ice! love the detail on the mosque too.
as for the woman, i think she's just fine right where she is. it depicts exactly what was happening. it's raining and she's headed for cover off-frame. if she were on the right side she'd be entering the (rainy) frame instead and the effect would be quite different.

Hi Bobby, I do agree with you, but as I replied to Saeed, that was not one of my options, When the rain started pooring down, we all headed for shelter, and I was barely in time to capture her before she reached shelter too...
Composition wise, I think you are right. If I could've controlled the situation, I'd probably ask the lady to stand out in the rain a bit longer....;o)
On the other hand, the current position and the rushed look of her does emphasise the ghastly weather. Composing the shot with the woman on the left would possibly have resulted in a more posed but better balanced scene.
As you see, I feel ambiguous about this. As most of my landscapes and cityscapes are of a reportive nature, I think I would've let the moment prevail, even if I had an opportunity to control it...
