About I saw this groundskeeper taking a rest when I walked down the stairs at Persepolis, near Shiraz, Iran, with his shiny tracksuit trousers, I could not resist taking a photo for this triptych. At first I thought this man had dozed off, but he came to life when I pointed my camera at him. As it was noon, the man facing due south, there where not much chances of using shadows to play with. Still the satisfaction on this man's face in the strengthening sun was worth the try. The lesson learned: Shoud've put my camera at +0.5 EV.... Please tell me what you think. Comments are, as always, greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Fine to see how the man comes up to life ;)

and to be honest I like the version of Danish ;)

but you took the shot, so the compliment needs to be spreaded 70:30...

Cheers,
Verena

Hi Zsolt, I shot this photo at just about noon, in a southern country (compared to ours: Iran) This man was enjoying the strengthening sun, facing due south, hence no shadows. As it was a clear day, the light reflected fiercly off the wall behind him. As I thought he was dosing off, I thought I could take a sneak shot, but he wasn't, but I had to take this one fast, without giving him the chance to pose for the camera. The dark colour of his skin is my mistake, trying to revive the tone and texture of the washed out wall behind him (Danish did a far better job than I did, and his version is *exactly* what I intended to achieve) Hope that answers your question....!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo!

Great shot! Interesting lighting.
How could you do this? I mean the shadows. I think there the sun is coming from nearly 90?, but it looks like a flashed shot.
I think the man is a little overcolored. How could you reach this?
I gaver 7 to it because it is woneful, special and very well done!
Congrats, Radák

A great portrait! The way he 'stand' in the photo and his job also makes a not common portrait. Perchaps need little less saturate at his body shape and more at the background here. The wall looks little bit more bright than it must be. Anyway, this is an important shot. I agree with the Journalism category because of his job! Good one. Best regards!

This is awesome. I love it. The details, the composition and the colors are great. The blue looks a bit to oversaturated, but could be my screen. BTW, you have a excellent portfolio. Cheers! Carlheinz

Dear hugo, wonderful shot my friend! good work!
I wanted to answer your question as to whether I bought a Nikon D70.. I actually spent about an hour at the camera store looking at it and of course we, as photographers, become enamored by any new camera or camera equipment we generally see! I must admit, this is a very very special camera extremely well thought out! I would almost give my right arm for it, but at this time I have two other digital cameras (Fuji-S5000 & Minolta A1) and I am torn as to whether or not I can justify spending another $1299.00??? so to make a long story short my Dear friend, I did not buy it yet... that is not to say I dont really want it because I do! HELP!!!!! what should I do???? advise... your friend, jon

I love the image Hugo. Composition is wonderful.

I like the neutral background against the vividness of his pants and shirt. I think the face is too saturated however.

But the overall photograph here, is so nice!!!

Good job Hugo!

Hi Tom, Replying to your comment, you are right about the -0.5 EV. That wouldn't have done any good.... I'll get to that later...

Cheers,

Hugo

This image brought a lot of comments regarding one of the most element in photography, midday sun especially around equatorial places and middles east, most of the photographer avoid this time, but the chance of an image to be there for you is miracles, another solution is ,special filters, and reducing 00EV,or easy life a"software",and other techniques and you must be knowing them, regards Saeed

Good capture! I guess he didn't want to be caught dozing. Lots of nice color, and I think the wall makes a great background for this fellow. I like his expression.

great colors hugo! my first instinct was to say you should've underexposed a bit. however, on viewing it more i don't think so. even though this looks insanely bright the detail in the wall and ground are there. more importantly the colors and detail on the man's clothes is beautiful. what makes the brightness ok for me is the fact that the dude is squinting hard. it's getting to him as well ;^) very nice shot!

just out of curiosity: how do you think -0.5EV would've helped?

take care,
tom

I like this one even better ? still high key but with the direct gaze of the subject and the off center placement. Around here, people are always suspicous and want to know why you are taking a picture. This man seems quite content to pose without a lengthy explanation.

Dear Hugo, I am coming from Shiraz and it is interesting that you have been in my hometown, wow,
I think that composition here works very well, classic! And the funny thing here is despite sunny weather he is wearing jacket and capes :-)) I know that old people are more sensitive to cold climates.
And as you have mentioned maybe your camera light meter reading was not successful here, I downloaded you image and did a balancing with his face and hands, because they were a little bit reddish and compensate the light BG.
PS I did answer your comment and question about zooming after your comments.
Best regards
Danish

..Hi my dear Hugo.. I believe that is one of the beautifulr photos never seen, in its semplicitŕ wonderful colors also thanks to the great film creed that the saturation is prorpio due to the film... a lot "hard" like appeals to me! it has an effect at the same time "ice" and "warmth". An optimal compositivo sense and genius for the title it... of this capolavoro I would not modify nothing is huge to the eyes and the spirit! cheers..

Hi Hugo,

Excellent and simple composition here, not too centered. Nice detail on the textured wall. I like the pose and expression of the groundskeeper. The exposure looks fine although 0.5 would have been better. It would have looked more dramatic with some shadows, but I know you couldn't resist.

Well done...

Hugo, this one is outstanding, too...

I was talking about the new UF feature... I hated it...

About your crop, I like to see how other photographers think.. thank you, again!

Hugo, An great photo. You have awaked the man from yesterday, the shadow is not there , The sun is right above your head.
Groet Teunis
