About Tortoises or land turtles are land-dwelling reptiles of the family of Testudinidae, order Testudines. Like their marine cousins, the sea turtles, tortoises are shielded from predators by a shell. The top part of the shell is the carapace, the underside is the plastron, and the two are connected by the bridge. The tortoise has both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton. Tortoises can vary in size from a few centimeters to two meters. Tortoises tend to be diurnal animals with tendencies to be crepuscular depending on the ambient temperatures. They are generally reclusive animals. The biggest operational difference between tortoises and turtles is that tortoises are unable to swim; indeed, they cannot float, whereas turtles can.

There are many old wives tales about the age of turtles and tortoises, one of which being that the age of a tortoise can be deducted by counting the number of concentric rings on its carapace, much like the cross-section of a tree. This is, of course, not true, since the growth of a tortoise depends highly on the access of food and water. A tortoise that has access to plenty of forage (or is regularly fed by its owner) will grow faster than a desert tortoise that goes days without eating.

Saved this one as quite some others from the road,
as they cannot find space to crowl under
fences mostly, lots are killed by traffic,
love these innocent, wonderful creatures!!

Have a wonderful weekend, Jenxx

Dear Jen this is this one of my dear Testudos ?
Beatiful focused shot of such a beautiful animal.
I love them so much,... why ?
I have had 5 of them as a boy of 10. Finally I had to bring them all to the Zoo of Amersfoort (to retire) as starting my studies in Utrecht, living on my own in a too small room.
The tortoises were called Yugi (after Yugoslavia), Zadi (after Zadar), Stari (after Starigrad) and honestly I do not remember the 2 I found in Greece during later holidays with my parents. It was all before the year (somewhere in the seventies) that these animals became protected species in Yugoslavia and Greece.
Many hugs and kisses to you Jen, like I gave them to my tortoises :-)

That will make a nice soup or maybe a good stew.... ;)
just kidding...:)
I had a pet tortoise as a kid and I remember that it laid an egg.. did you put this one on the other side of the fence, maybe it will go back to the road if you didn't.. but if you did put it on the other side of the fence, he won't be able to go back to his friends and family... well what did you do Jen?? :)
Very good about, now I now what crepuscular mean and that's not me..
regards..

Hi Jen, your remarks and info are quite correct. I remind me of a study that was done on tortoise numbers and biomass within the succelent thicket vegetation of the Estern Cape, SA (Port Elizabeth - East London areas). I am stating this under correction but the biomass of tortoise per hectare was estimated to range between 1 to 3 metric tons. It sounds very high but this type of vegetation in its natural state is almost impenetrable and it has a large component of succulent plants, often growing at ground level - lots of juicy food! Keep well!

Say cheeeeese! hahaha... the peaceful little turtle does not looks like interested about that big black thing (lens) that cames near to her and watch her like a big eye... but after that it's a lovely shot my friend... sometimes ugly turtles are really lovely... very nice wildlife shot.
be well!
