Location City -  Sossusvlei
State -  SOUTHERN NAMIBIA
Country - Namibia   Namibia
About This hill is no more than a temporary barrier to the dunes of the Namib. Only the top of this hill remains uncovered by the marching sands. Taken from the air in a gyrocopter. Image slightly cropped to correct horizon tilt, otherwise pretty much as taken except for minor adjustments of the sharpness, brightness and contrast.

A Gyrocopter is an open, mini-helicopter, you sit in the backseat (in tandem), the average speed is about 150km/hour and one have to shelter oneselve against the wind by hiding behind the back of the pilot. The wind is so strong that you have to hold onto the camera very well to prevent it from flying through the air (lost a few lensecaps in the process). I used the 50mm Nikkor for max lens opening but opted for ISO 200 on the D70 for best results/lowest noise. The light was very low and deteriorated from 1/1,500sec when we lifted to about 1/100sec when the sun set - all within about 20 minutes. One unforgettable experience.

This must have been an amazing experience by copter Joggie! I did fly by Micro Light around Capetown, getting quite windy so got a little scared:) But the view was incredable! So, even more above Sossusvlei and better then climbing up anayway..loll Jen

Thanks for your comments David - very valuable! About Tjaart: yes I know him - he is my younger brother. What amazes me is our different perspectives of the same places we cover! Take care.

Fabulous shot. The shapes and rich tones are wonderful.

Maybe you could consider leaving (or adding) a little more sky at the top - I feel it is perhaps just a little too tight up against the frame.

Beautiful quality, Joggie! The gradation is very effective perspective and the eye is always pulled back to the richly detailed foreground. From the bottom, the eye is brought back up by the crest of the dune. It is amazing that you were able to get so much visual variety on this dune theme - in one short flight!

Great light on this one, just bright enough to see all the details like the plant life yet dark enough to get the late afternoon feeling.

The lines of these dunes are just amazing, so crisp and undisturbed. And I find it interesting that the plant life only encroached on them so high, indicating the crowns of the dune are really shiftng constantly.

Best wishes,
Dave

Wow, stunning colours and great composition here, Joggie! I especially like the way you've captured the ridge of the dune leading straight into the shot, and then the receding layers of hills in the background.
Dave.

Thanks Larry, had about 5Gbytes of memory cards on hand. Shot between 2 and 3 Gbytes (at 2-3 mb per shot) within the twenty minutes of the flight. A real party!
