About Taken along the road to the top of the Marin Headlands. The south facing cliffs along the road, glow red at sunset, and expose the force used to create this massive hillside fo the bay side that looks down on the Golden gate Bridge.

Using the borrowed 100-400L on a tripod, taken from directly across the street of where I pretended to have car trouble... to get the shot. ;)

The best of three, and yet -

Something is just not quite on in these, maybe it's that the pattern is not abstracted, or I'm not getting the color, I don't know.

These aren't working for me Joel, but you have so many views and good critiques I think I'm just having an off day.

Neat pattern, great tones and details... like the few little plants in between the cracks... Nice natural abstract, could've used some shadows to make it more 'interesting'... so maybe go back on a sunny day... good excuse to loan (or buy) that lens again... LOL!!

Lovely shot. I missed the subtlety of the triangle but I was for sure taken in by the flow of the rock. Amazing what use you made out of this lens. I have no idea of the scale of the rock but my guess is smaller than a buick. Well done.

Hugo..

I was looking so forward to reading your words on these images.

Thank you very much, first off. Yes, I knew that this was the one for the CC. It has something that the others do not. I'm glad you picked up on the triangle (just read about that in a photo history book). I made an hard effort to balance this one in camera. There was a very small area that I trimmed off from the right side, but for the most part, the image is as captured.

If you wanna see something wild, take the image and rotate it 90CW. It takes on a whole new life. The balance goes away, as you're drawn to the top. Then rotate it back, and it's like you drank a cool glass of water on a hot day.

Thanks again for the detailed comments! So much to learn about taking pictures of rocks!

cheers,
-joel

Hi Joel,

I've been looking at the two images, and I think you picked the best for the Critiquer's Corner. A great shot form a technical point of view, and a veryinticate line play in the composition, but I'll get to that later.

To me, the green leafs growing between the creases in the rock, creating an imaginary triangle on the left of the image makes this stand out in comparison with the other one. They manage to add a nice diversion from the geological pattern created by the rock.

The green triangle also balances the composition; with out them, I think the left part of the image would've been a little "off side"; the more condensed lines in the rocks take the eye to the right side of the photo.

The way I see this (the reasoning why this works better than the "other" one) is that the green leafs introduce another intricate and subtle lineplay, as if superimposed on another one of nature's blue prints.

Very nice study of composition and shape!

Cheers,

Hugo

You can borrow my car next time if you want, then you won't need to pretend to have engine trouble! ;-)

Hi Joel! Amazing stuff! What is even more amazing is to see the small signs of life on the cliff. Excellent textures, and a very nice composition!

Beautiful shot. It is amazing what nature can do. The rock layers look like bent in shape. Amazing. I really like the colour.

Regards,
Stefan
