After image enhancement there is no doubt this is a fantastic shot of a Southwest Boeing 737-7H4 either doing something to prove the aircrafts ability or ????. shot with an EOS 20D, Digital format RAW, Lens Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM, defiantly not analog??? I am very interested in weather the date the photo was uploaded reflects the date that the photo was shot. Thank you, Gary

Thanks for the details, but I assure you that there is no digital re-construction of this image. Anyone who knows me, and knows what i do for a living, will tell you that I have a reputation of not using my day job to alter images that I shoot.
I may rotate and crop, but I assure you that as a professional digital artist, and photographer, that I have a very difficult time even using photoshop on any image of mine.
Just on this point alone, I have left digital photography altogether, and have pursued analog film with my photographic career.
The only variable missing from the equation is the angle that my camera was that day on the tripod. Ask anyone I know.. I don't alter my images.

Not to take away from the artists creative composition or the artistry of digital manipulation this is beyond believable as I read the artists description and relate it to my understanding of the moons position relative to northern hemisphere viewing.
(When does this happen!?
I am tyring out the Canon 100-400L lens this weekend, and could not resist spending Sunday evening taking pictures of the moon.
I heard a jet, and just kept going about taking far too many pictures of the moon. When I saw the Jet cruising thru my viewfinder, I could not press the shutter fast enough.
The crop, a slight contrast addition, and levels adjustment in PS to get as much detail as possible showing was all that was done.)
I was centered on the Moon almost directly above my head at the time, so I pulled a crop from the right, placing the center between the jet and the Moon.
The orientation of the moon is wrong and commercial jets do not fly upside down or perpendicular to the Earths surface. If the position of the moon Is examined you will see moons familiar and predominate white crater (Tycho) located in the Full Moon Atlas: Sector G-3 Tycho/Clavius South as found on http://www.lunarrepublic.com/atlas/sections/g3.shtml the artists composition puts the Moons positional alignment out of alignment by about 45° as it is viewed in the northern hemisphere. If the photo is placed in the correct alignment as the moon as it is viewed in the northern hemisphere the commercial liner is performing a suicide decent, straight into the ground. The composition is intriguing but in reality and according to the description is not believable.

plastic bag, pretty much just around the body. what kills, is the wind spray of rain on the lens. I may just find a cafe, and shoot thru an open door. (nobody closes their doors here... too freakin humid.

Man, this rocks!
I love the disorienting nose-down orientation of the Southwest 737. Well deserved award. Congrats.
I know some photographer once said "I will take luck over skill anyday; the more pictures I take, the luckier I get."
Browsing your portfolio reveals nothing about luck, but a lot about a keen perception and persistence. Keep shooting.

There's a bunch of us 'Canon' freaks at work, and we somehow all seem to have different lenses, so it's kinda like a pool of lenses to use! But I'll tell ya, first chance I get, i'm going to buy my own 100-400L. For an extending zoom... it's an awesome lens!

Wow, what a great capture!! Wonderful pie in the sky and neat bird alongside it, but not one I would want to sit in..... wwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh.... going downnnnnnnnnnn or at least it looks that way... LOL!!! That is 'Southwest Airlines'. It's the cheapest, fastest, and best airline here in the states. I'm about to get on board one in a few hours to head to LA for a meeting. It's pretty much the 'bus' of the west coast. They are painted like the south west colors...but everyone's favorite is the "Shamu the Killer Whale : Seaworld" paint job. Always looking up to see a flying Orca! ;)

I'll tell ya Ron... all day Saturday, I just sat an looked at the lens like the RCA dog. Then I slowly approached it like the monkeys wacking a stick at the monolith in "2001: A Space Odyssey". in fact, I even made sounds like that when I picked the camera up with the lens attached.
I did snap through about 200 images, before my 3rd glass of wine took me outside to the porch to watch the moon with my camera on Sunday.
Try backing off on how much light you get into that ENORMOUS chunk of glass on this lens. The fast shutter did wonders for me with those rocks (by the way.. that wide image is about as long as a school bus). Attached is a post I was going to put on UF, but decided not...who knows...may still. you know how it goes.
It's a bracket on exposure 1500 on top, all the way to 1000 on the bottom.
Good luck..and hang on to that lens! it's your monolith.

I've owned this lens for about 6 months and I still have fears about it. You have gotten better shots off it in one weekend than I have in 6 months. You encourage me to keep trying. I was thinking of selling it. I took the same moon shot but thought it was too flat and unexciting. I wasn't shooting at 1/1000. Didn't think I could.

I'll be posting the uncropped (and slightly untilted) version later in a composition with the other moon images I captured yesterday.
It's a wild illusion! The moon was almost directly above. The plane was traveling south/east on it's way to Oakland. What's causing the illusion, is the crop, and the fact that I slightly tilted (about 5 CW) the entire image so the plane pointed to the bottom corner. Compound that, with the fact that the plane is in a slight turn, and being photographed with in insane long lens!
It's a great study of what your eye sees! I love to rotate images, and sometimes flop them to get a very different look. In this case, a few degrees to the right, and the plane is in a nose dive!

I see what you mean... I still have to see the last Star Wars, and now I'll definitely be looking for the kitchen sink...:)
I guess they're two completely different ways of editing, as well as looking at scenes; with films, I presume the sequence, flow, as well as transitions are way more important to scruitinise the details frame by frame. Individual frame compositions are less important, as motion will solve that automatically. - all seen from a laymans' perspective, though.
There must also be many corresponding things; as all people I know who work in the film industry are very proficient photographers too...:)
A side note: The majority of my family either works in film, in design or in photography. I'm clueless about the film industry, though...;)

I'll put together the composition tonight. I haven't tried that yet, so I can imagine going insane with how much space between each tile, and what goes where. It's the little things.
I was just rollin on snapping images of the moon. I had these little windows where there were no clouds...some images do have clouds, and those could be prime for the center image. ...gonna be a fun one for sure.
Ya see... you're tought, 'cause you're doing what a visual effects artist avoids. We call it 'frama dn pixel f*cking'. Pardon the term! If we stopped on every frame of a movie, and picked it apart, we would take years to get a film done! ..but we still do that to some point as needed... because we always need to please the DVD crowd!
Did you see the kitchen sink in the opening battle scene of the last Star Wars ;)

Hey Joel,
I hear you on the composited look, that reference / mistake is easily made, as the scene is almost too good to be true.
I like the thought of composing a 4 or 9 cell composition. The Michael way of choosing...:) I think it would not only provide a good overview of the sequence, but also make it easier to compare the various compositions. Are you thinking of using a chronological placement of the individual photos? I'd love to see the sequence, and I'm really curious what else you have to chose from!
I'm tougher, heh...:) I consider that a huge compliment!

tried not to touch the image that much (i.e. isolate the plane, and correct it apart from the sky) to avoid that 'composited' look. (I have a tough crowd here at ILM that would pick me apart in a second if they smell comp!) ...but you're tougher ;)
When I was on my way into work, thinking about your comments about this, I thought of what you said about the composition. What I may try tonight, is a 4 cell, possibly a 9 cell layout of all my moon shots, and have this be the one on the bottom right. thoughts?

...yes, I am an idiot. Saved out a 850 wide, instead of the 1200 allowed. The larger version is *insane* You can see teh windows on the plane, and clearly read "Southwest" on the rudder.

Awesome shot; the angle of the plane takes it even more out of the usual "moon shot". Well exposed, and The additional touch of colour is great.
I'd work on the levels a bit, increasing the brightness in the plane a notch that would really make it tick! And as you shot many of these, I'd love to see one with a slightly more diagonal composition, preferably with the plane in the top right and the moon in the lower left corner; the antagonism would make it even more surreal than it already is.
It's always easy to find something to nitpick about; I believe this is already a winner, as well as a very fine handled shot. Can't help rambling on when I see something as challenging as this...:)
