I like this photo a lot, Thilo. The blurriness, the colors and tones, and the composition all work for me. The only change I would like is to get rid of the white line of the inner frame. I find it distracting, especially in the upper part of the photo. It's a very small point about a very well done photo. Steve

hi,good choice of aperture to keep the foreground elements focused and blur the rest of the image which lends mystery...superb timing to capture the man with cane and he is in a good position within the framing...although the golden light is very warm and appealing,i can't help but wonder how this would look in B/W...perhaps more mysterious? hugs, gayle

Hi Thilo! I compared this to the couple in love, and although it´s said "make love not war" I like this one better, because of the golden tones. Also, the small field in focus in the foreground is very nice. Fabulous mood!

Hi Joel,
appreciate your constructive critics. you mentioned the drop, and I think the image would lose something without the focussed stones. Interesting idea anyway.
Thx, Thilo

Hi Thilo, I would say that the out of focus main subject matter is effective in this case. The impression could be interpreted as someone making their way from uncertainty to stability. The bonus is there is a group following him as well. The well placed leading light also helps with this illusion. The effect is really quite artistic. Somewhat reminicent of the kind of mood that Mitchel Miller creates in his photo art images. Too bad the man doesn't have an umbrella over his head :) Unlike Mithell's images, I'm sure your shot is all one image without a lot of manipulation. Very well composed image over-all. Andre

beautiful how the only sharp part of frame is the cobble stone road. it really gives me the sense of the subject moving further and further away. good stuff!

I agree with you Hugo and George. You pretty much said what I was thinking when I viewed the image.
It's such a powerful image, and leaves so much for your mind to fill in. I had a hard time, and I'm still on the fence with the focus issue.
One could argue that a crop (just above that one bright brick in the center) would hold the passion in the passion in the image much better, but that clarity of almost seeing the bricks in the foreground adds a fantastic weight to the composition, as if we're looking up from an umbrella in the rain, and nothing is in focus. We wish we're not that man, and we almost don't want to stare. But we do, and that's what this image makes me feel.
Brilliant capture, and so well presented! Outstanding depth, and story telling.
Very well done!
cheers, -Joel

Well, Hugo really nailed it technically. This shot has great atmospherics and poetry. The position of his foot and the line of the cane on those rough cobblstones are beautifully done. The isolation of the figure from the group is also very powerful. I also like the ambiguity (one of my many weaknesses) of being uncertain as to whether the figure is moving towards or away from the camera. Very strong and touching. (BTW, another appropriate project would be 45-Blurry Image). Best of luck, --George

Hi Thilo,
Technically, this one isn't out of focus, only the focus pane is not where one would expect it... the cobble stones in the foreground almost seem en focus. I think it's an interesting concept, and definitely a good exercise. I think you succeeded well in creating a very interesting photo, and even-though the pane of focus is probably somewhere out of view, the old man with the cane, being chased by the hoodlums in the back (my imagination talking) is still quite obviously the primary subject. I think in that aspect, this photo is definitely successful. Photographically, I'd like to see a version where the "hoodlums" (yeah I know they're not) in the back would be in focus. I wonder if the old man with the cane would still be perceived as the primary subject. See what I mean?
The wet cobblestones definitely work to your advantage, creating a pattern of light, which makes this photo very appealing. Good stuff, and I always like when someone tries to explore something new, and especially if that exploration is so successful!
I have to think about this for a while.... I like the idea, and might have a go at it too...:)
Cheers,
Hugo
