About The title is from a line in Wordsworth's "Daffodils"

It was my wife Bonnie's idea for me to do a close up shot of one of these dried out Daffodils.
The light is a single 40 watt incandescent bulb indoors.
The dried out flower is actually paler than this desaturated image. In this case the low quality 40 watt bulb helped to bring back a little of the colour.

Thanks Ashley,
I like what you said about the flower living a hard life. :) I suppose that is possible.

Nice capture. The title helps to add to the atmosphere. The weatheres appearance of the blossom gives the impression that the flower has lived a hard life and is now enjoying the solitude. Nice capture.

Thanks Francesco,
I agree with you. I think the yellow cast adds to the almost antiqued look of the image. It almost seems like it could be 100 years old. I'm very happy with this one!

Hi Thilo,
I thought I would try exploring my sensitive side :) But, it didn't last long! I soon came back to the dark side for the next one.

This one is old and wrinkled, just like me ;)

Hi Jon,
I think one of the problems with dried roses is that they seem to have no natural contrast. I tried a couple of shots with similar lighting that I used on the daffodils and had an entirely different result. About a year ago now I tried scanning some dried bouquets as well. I might have even copied your shots :) I'll have to have a look at yours now and find out. I used my scanned roses in an image with an old stove that I found in a farmer's dump. I think the image is called "21.900 Happy Thoughts"

Hi Andre,

oh, you're working in the creative flower department? Well this one has great detail in it. shows some signs of ages though =)

best wishes,
Thilo

I have a couple of shots of dried roses near the beginning of my portfolio which - interestingly - I took with a scanner. You are right that they don't dry as delicately as these daffs.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,
I see what you mean about the extra stalks. This was a section of a small bouquet. So, that's why the extra stuff. I could go either way with or without the stalks myself.
I'm really happy with the tones of the background playing off the delicate petals too. I think that's what really makes the shot.

Excquisite. The black background sets off the delicacy of the flower petals very nicely. A tiny bit less clutter might be good - I like the close crop but I wonder if there might be a couple of stalks too many.

cheers,

Jon

Thanks Ray,
I am really happy with the way this one came out. It sort of has that aged beauty look about it.

Hi Dave,
The same with me. I think it was madatory back then. :) Off course the only thing we really remember is the first line "I wandered lonely as a cloud". The rest is a blur :)
I had to go on the net to look up a suitable title for this from a line back in the poem. :)

Excellent texture and details in the dried flowers, Andre! Now that you mention it, I remember taking that poem in school, in the very dim past!

Thanks Susie,
I am really happy with this one. If I had to rate my own stuff, this one would be right up there near the top of my recent images. No tricks, just nice and simple and subtle.
I tried doing some like this with dried roses that were not as effective for some reason. Maybe I'll try again now that I have a method.
I used a tripod for this one, because the light was pretty low. I'm sure some good results could be obtained using window light as well.
Give it a try!

Hi Laura,
I actually did do this in a few versions. I tried sepia and straight B&W. I liked it in all versions. I posted this desaturated colour version as a sort of "here nor there" compromise that I was really happy with.
Maybe I'll post the other versions too.

Thanks Randee,
I think you are right. The texture of the petals reminds me of that old fashioned material that a lot of clothes were made from. Or even that rough, raw Indian style Madras cotton.

Thank you Rashed,
I think these kind of floral shots look best when tight cropped. Glad you like it.

Hi Andre,

I agree, this really did come out well. I wonder how it would look in sepia... to further the vintage look?
