Thanks Gabriella,
It seems strange to see this image today when the temperature was +36c. No ice today :)

Hi Andre!

Well, it was rather rebooting life itself, but it belongs to the same category! ;-)

I meant not only raising or lowering the noise by tweaking the ISO but also its "shape", color, distribution, hardness, etc right on the camera. It would be helpful for example to see what a color iimages would look like with a B&W noise, or similar things. As it is now on digital cameras it is more something like an unwishable but also inevitable result.

Cheers!

Hi Nick,
It's good to see you back after quite a long absence from the site. Sometimes it's good to take a little break and re-boot our ideas. :)
Yes, In Photoshop you have that option to selectively desaturate colours. Also to darken or lighten individual colours in the same drop-down-box. You can also isolate an area with the "lasso" tool and work on that area selectively.
As far as controlling "noise" in the camera settings, you can always turn the iso number way up, at least for a certain kind of noise. I don't really like doing that in colour. But for B&W, the effect sort of simulates grain.

Ling time but I kept all threads in mind, Andre, or I hope I did! ;-)

Yes, desaturating the offending color is a good method, especially if one has the possibility to also restrict desaturation to special areas of interest if necessary, in order to not affect that color in other areas where it is perhaps important.

The question that remains is then why not making it available to control and enhance noise (if wishable) right in the camera, since the nowadays electronics could readily do that. Imagine being able to take some image with a special kind of noise that resembles grain, or anything else, right out of the box. I have the impression that this will be one of the "extras" that they will incorprorate into the whole concept of a digital camera, and for my taste it will be a good thing to do. It would be like another "maturing" or "widening" the very conceiving of photography itself, no matter if digital or analog.

Cheers and have a nice weekend!

Hi Nick,
I think one thing that might be able to be done to tone down noise in a colour exposure is to selectively de-saturate the offending colour. Of course, that would only work if the colour you want to eliminate is not a major element in the rest of the image.
I'm going to look for that image now. Thanks!

This is also something that I wonder about, Andre, namely if it couldn't be possible to somehow restrict the noise to the real existing volors of the scene. Strange but it seems that noise is just taken as something that has to be avoided rather than as something that could be controlled and used as a stylish element.

Wish you much fun in the fog! You should really be around here these days. We have so much fog that we could export it for photography! ;-) (Very exact fog, made in CH, that is ;-))

Cheers!

Nick

P.S.: BTW, small dedication to you today. (Image: "Abandined ladder".)

Thanks Nick,
I am happy with the camera. So many possibilities.
I like the idea of using the high iso numbers for simulation of B&W grain. I'm not so sure I like the effect on colour because of the introduction of colour noise that is not really in the image.
I'm still waiting for that hazy/foggy day for a few more tries at this.

Hi Andre and thanks a bunch for these interesting results! Even if the weather was so different we really can see what happens at different ISO settings. The higher ISO had the greastest contrast and the more intense coloring, didn't it? And for that it also had more noise, but to tell you the truth: First of all I would expect a whole lot more of noise (for me = grain) with a 1600 film, and second of all.. I don't even find it as disadvantageous for this scene. I can imagine very very nice images that use that noise for enhancing its atmosphere. All those "small chunks" of blue seem to enhance the winter air for my eyes.

And the other thing is that I think that a higher ISO could turn such a cloudy day, as on your posted image, to something different. It would be still a cloudy day but I assume also pronounced in a different way. So, let's see what could be possible with that.

BTW, great camera you have! So little noise at ISO 1600!!! Just be happy, Andre!

A different iso number, same scene.
800 iso, f22, 1/400 sec.

I promise to go back on a hazy overcast day and try this again. I will try 1600, 800 and 400 iso readings. I suspect the 400 will work beautifully. allowing f22 at about 1/100 sec.

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 2/8/2009
Hi Nick,
Unfortunately, I didn't make it out there yesterday to try the iso experiment. I went today instead, under completely different weather conditions. So, for the time being, it is like comparing apples to oranges. :)
At least I learned exactly how high I can go with the iso number before the noise takes over completely and makes the image unexceptable. I will attach two images from a bright sunny day, taken with the same camera and lens. 18mm focal length setting. Both images have been cropped to about half the original size (as was the new year's day image)
The first one has a setting of iso 1600, f22, 1/800 sec.
I think this one has a too much noise for my liking.

That would be really exciting, Andre, to directly compare the results of different ISO.

Waiting in fascination in advance!

Spot on and cheers!

Hi Nick,
Today we have similar overcast conditions. I will try going to the same area and do a few shots with a higher f stop and a high ISO reading for comparison to this one. I'll post an attachment with the results later.

I see, Andre. Such days are very often here too, especially in winter. I often inlude much of the near ground just in front of my feet in order to break the uniform diffusion everywhere, but even this doesn't work always. A very hard situation for me even after already many many attempts. I have seen great images under such conditions but still I can't really say, how to do something similar.

BTW, what would a higher speed film do here? (Or higher sensitivity for your camera.) Normally this brings also a stronger contrast, so could that add some more pronounced contours?

Cheers!

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 2/4/2009
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the comment on this one. I think the diffused look would have been even stronger if I hadn't played with the level bars in photoshop. It was a very hazy day. Not really mist because of the cold temps. But, the diffusion was mostly natural.

For many reasons I like it and for some few I dislike, Andre. The mood is perfectly taken, and I think the overall toning does much to support that. The narrow orange band back at the horizon defines very well the "target point" as a place where the planes of ice and clouds meet. The ice and the clouds are indeed both moody, but especially the clouds seem to be less pronounciated than I'd think they must have been. Same, but to a lower degree, on the foreground ice. So... perhaps hyperfocal would be necessary? Or of you did that, what could be used for a bot of enhancement of the (assumed) textures that could have supported the image?

Except of course if that kind of "diffuse" look was your idea.

Cheers!

Thanks Rina,
It was one of those surreal scenes because the lake is almost always windy, with good size waves, wich would give this a completely different look. It was too cold to rain that day. But snow was a real possibility.
Thanks again.

That's one heck of a heavy sky Andre, wow. Gotta love the reflections on the ice and that glow in the distance, hinting at some rain... Great stuff. Adding to faves :)

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 1/9/2009
Thanks Ray,
The scene was very surreal. The nice texture on the water was caused by a very thin layer of ice that was able to form because of the lack of wind for quite some time. Later on in the day, the wind picked up and the thin layer of ice was replaced by waves.
Thanks again Ray.

As I am working backwards my good friend I have already wished you a Happy New Year so my comment is about the picture. May 2009 be a lot brighter and more colourful than Jan 1 was over there What a grey day Andre with just that little strip of land tone separating the sky from the water. Loads of detail in the greyness, well done to you. Cheers again to you my dear friend......Ray
