Hi mark, I come from an art background too, and we have pre-formed images in our mind of things "should look" but I've learned that that could also be an impediment, because it stops us from "seeing" - and we keep searching for those pre-formed "ideal" images. As with all art, it has to transform the way we see accept other ways of seeing. In classical times it would have been unthinkable to portray machinery, industrial landscapes, and the likes. Also, to skew perspective, etc. So I'm trying to include some things that are not necessarily pretty, but are part of the scenery. That might not always succeed, but I'm making a conscious decision to leave them in, in an attempt to break out of the cliche. I don't pretend to do anything revolutionary, this is pretty mild stuff, but I am trying to assert my own vision :) This can be a long discussion :))))

I agree with all you say inn your reply Ina. As someone who has done artwork in traditional artistic mediums (pastels, pencils, and digital painting) and as an art lover, I sometimes tend to think in the context of those traditional mediums, even as I relate to photography. While I think that artwork experience is for the most an asset in my attempts at fine art photography, I think it can also be a limitation. A part of what I am trying to do at this stage of my artistic life is to learn to see what is before me in different contexts. To free myself, in a selective way, from seeing things as I have in the past. Long held "ideals" and habitual ways of vision are hard to change!
Your reply reminds me that I often try to shoot something as I might paint it, and while that is not a bad thing in itself, sometimes it's better to make choices that are free of preconception, or that explore roads not previously taken. Photography is generally a medium that captures the literal (photoart manipulations aside) yet in doing so it may show something in a new or alternate way. It's that aspect of making photos that most challenges the traditional thinker in me. A thought provoking reply you've made, thanks Ina!

Thank you very much Gabriela :) I enjoy the challenge of working with the quiet beauty of rural Southern Ontario, where everything is flat, where there are no grandiose mountains and landmarks - I find that quiet atmosphere requires more thought and presents less immediate visual excitement at the time of taking the pictures, like finding a diamond in the rough.

Thanks very much Mark :) You're right about a vertical focal point, such as a church spire!
I think the lack of architectural landmarks makes it more challenging though, for the simple fact that one has to find beauty in what is there, rather than in what we have grown to know as "ideal" in landscape painting. That was my point all along in my discussions with others, saying how much easier it was to do a nice landscape in a place known for its established beauty, such as a NP, etc. That's why I particularly enjoy these unknown places, mainly for their modest beauty and for that challenge. That's my theory, anyway :)

A wonderful classic landscape. The lines of cloud follow the lines of the river very well creating a great sense of depth and dimension. The colors of blue and gold are veryt eye catching. from a color and composition aspect this has a landscape painting sort of feel, whicvh I like. It would be nice if there were some visual focus in the middle ground, such as a church steeple or other structure. The downstream bridge could almost serve that purpose but it's just too far away. That's the advantage of being a painter, you could simply paint a focal point in! In any event, that is not intended as a critism, simply an observation. Wonderful work here Ina.

Here I like the colours and the sky. Lucky you to have such an atmosphere in full Canadian winter (?)The only thing is the foreground - the water which passes too suddenly from mirror to whirling stream. Not that it is not beautiful, but it just surprises the eye.But the whole atmosphere is epic in character.

Wonderful lighting and tones. The foreground diagonal of still water and reflection is superb in contrast to the flowing river. I think there is tension with the receding river perspective and the foreground diagonal. This adds a lot of interest to the compostion.

Ina... wow... I love all 3 but this one just takes my breath away and I think it's mainly because of the stunning calm/moving water. Gosh, you do landscapes so well. I'm going to have to keep a closer eye on your work for inspiration.

the full size pano really does open this shot up .theres alot of subjects to take note of and features ,i like the reflection ,yes as commented above it tends to darken and the footbridge is slightly overlapping the smooth still water area in the far bottom right hand corner. however i would still like to see this hanging on a spacious wall somewhere.
almost perfect !

Hi Jim, and thank you for your comment! I was up on a railway bridge over the water, and as a matter of fact, I do have an abstract with just that portion of the river, before it drops, and the clouds reflection in the calm water. I decided to post these classic style landscapes as a series and not mix them with the abstract ones, because they are similar in color and style. I will post the abstract ones separate. I could actually post one more with just the river, if you bear with me, I'll do just that!

Ina I like the compositional elements of your image. The golds and blues are beautiful. There does seem to be a lot on the fringes of your image that are mildly distracting though. I don't think there is much you can do in regard to this given the setting, but it does impact your photo. I'm not sure if a mildly different vantage point was available to you or not to avoid including the railing in the bottom right. The line created between the calm and turbulent water also is a weird element. I actually would like it more if it were a larger part of your image. It could be great for an abstract. As is it does look rather out of place taking up a small sliver of your image.
