I know I like to tell my camera settings but when I save for the web in PS where I can control the size of the image I loose it. Looks fine in this image. Good flow from the falls and not much haze this time of year in this photo.

I actually prefer the color image more, Ann. After looking at some many b&w interpretations of Yosemite, it's good to be reminded of how splendid it is in its natural colors.
As for Douglas, I think his unsolicited post of his own image is in bad taste. It's obvious that he was just looking for another opportunity to promote his own work with no real intention to be helpful. I am a new member here. Even though I've been here for only a few days, I've already noticed a pattern of condescending comments from him to various photographers. What a shame to see a person with so much potential in photography but possesses so little in self-esteem.

Great vista, but not the best on earth (that must be the Tetons as seen from the shores of Jackson Lake or possibly Mormon row) :)
Sadly the one time I was in Yosemite the family didn't give me the time I'd have wanted (several days instead of a few hours) to explore the park and photograph the scenery. I've since trained them otherwise ;)
Looks like you lost quite a bit of details in the shadow and highlight areas when reducing it to black and white.
Could be your process, could be your camera (y'all know I'm partial to more traditional ways of capturing the world...).
And indeed, as already said, you really need maximum attainable DOF for a scene like this, and as you're high in the mountains a polariser and/or a strong skylight (1B at least, 1C or 1D preferred if you don't use a polariser).

Possibly the best view on Earth - and simply not possible to catch on film. You have to *be* there to experience and appreciate it. Ansel Admas did the definitive work on Yosemite. Yosemite is just so magical. I have seen several folks now indicate that a digital camera is somehow different from an SLR. An SLR is a single lens reflex camera - which is exactly what a digital camera with interchangeable lenses is. The only difference between film cameras and digital cameras is the media, i.e. digital or film. All other aspects remain the same, including lenses and metering. If you lok at Ansel Adams' original Vallet Shot - you'll see the only difference is the height of the trees in the foreground!

the classic view Ann
When I went there in 2000 I'd never seen a photo of the place so did not know what to expect..
Suffice to say I was blown away when nwe came into the valley. An experience I'll never forget.
I like the tones - it's a nice high key feel, the mono worksn cause the cliffs are actually that colour - and the trees have taken on a nice mid tone.
not a lot to improve with grads here cause though you'd get darker and more detailed sky, the toip of El Capitain and Brideangel falls woul dalso be darker and look artificial. you can get round this by taking 2 shots - one light for the foreground (trees) and one faster exposure for the sky. Then put them in photoshop and blend

I think both versions are fantastic!
More texture and detail is in the b&w version and I really like that one. I think it makes one study the formation of the landscape and appreciate it more than the color....just my opinion!

Both have great merit Ann, no favourite from me, they both work well and make great viewing.The mono is the more dramatic but the colour is more pictorial. Lovely work Ann, keep on posting.. Best wishes..Ray

Hi Ann! I look at both versions and angle more to BW I like the panoramic and DOF of your shot It is a beautiful work specially the mountain on the left compose a great ending and beginning with the rest.

I love color!!!! I am an x-ray technologist and look at black and white images of anatomy all day long. Yes, this is a famous spot that all people have taken pictures of. I never tire of this view though because it is so grand. Great picture even in black and white.

Beautiful capture Ann! Though I like the B&W one too, I would say my favorite here is the color one. I feel the color is a major part of such a beautiful scene. Its a lovely shot with a nice composition.

Thank you for your take on this image Kathy, I too lean towards the colour. I think partly because my B&W images aren't as good quality as I'd like them to be but I'm no Ansel Adams either (and don't claim or try to be) That having been said I think maybe the colour distracts from the lack of quality that shows up in my B&W's. Just a thought.
Hmmm....naaaah....I just think landscapes are nice shown in their colour form. :)

Hi Ann,
I like both of these versions! As a rule I am not a fan of b&w landscapes...at least I wasn't until lately. There are so many great ones here on Usefilm that I'm beginning to change my mind :) But, that being said, I think I am in the minority, but I lean toward the color version just a tad. Well done!

Ann I love this shot, Ansel Adams made this famous years ago and the little parking lot was placed there for everyone to have the chance to see this vista. I remember it well, as I chanced 4x5 film in the back seat of the rental car and the family was not very happy with the time I took at this place (;-)....

My advice per the attached and you knew I was going to do this right ... ? Anyway ... If you are going to go this wide then the dof should be at least f22 since you are probably not a member of the F64 CLUB!

What a wonderful wide vista! A lovely b&w landscape shot with very nice mountains. Beautiful presentation both, but I prefer the b&w version! This is more fine tones and more soft contrast incliding! Well captured! Very nice National Park portrait shot! :) I do love it! Well done dear Ann! 7+++
