About This young lady recently started attending my English Bible Class. She kindly let me use my new macro lens, which doubles as a medium telephoto lens, to take her portrait. I very much like the image quality, which is sharp without being harsh. The light was rather dim, so I was glad of my fast film, and the natural lighting from the window behind and a much brighter window to her right, have worked pretty well.

Yes, the exposure is great. It looks as if it were flashed, but I guess the unseen window light to her right was all that was needed, and the intense backlight didn't fool you or your meter. A very nice result for a nice girl. I hope you gave her a print!

My love affair with the Tamron macro was very short lived, Mary. The aperture started to stick almost at once, and Tamron said it needed a part they no longer stock. I got my money back and have invested in a new (deeply discounted) Cosina manual macro lens, 100/3.5 rather than 90/2.5. It comes with a supplementary lens that boosts the macro ratio to 1:1, so I should be OK for insect hunting!

Beaqutiful image, Roger. The colour and clarity are great. Have fun with your new lens!

Thanks for the insightful comment, John. Yes, this is all new for me. Comes of getting a 90mm macro lens that doubles nicely as a portrait lens. It lets me get further away than my beloved "wides," and therefore reduces stress on the subjects (and me!). I have a pair with this in which she smiled. I'll post that for comparison with this comment.

With a smile...

Well Roger, this is a step off the normal path for you isn't it?. Nicely done. I can see that she really doesn't feel comfortable yet but given time she may relax a bit more. I can see how you, the student-teacher relationship and being in front of a camera, all could tense her up a bit.

Yes, I've noticed that, Bertram. It doesn't seem very suitable for macro shots, either... the out-of-focus areas get rather nasty grain, particularly if they are in the shade and the main subject is a bright flower in full sunlight, as is often the case. This was an unexpected complication I encountered in my attempts to take macros.

Perfectly focused, Roger ! And the wonder film at it's limits, I know that. In dim light it can get a bit prudish sometimes :-)

A very nicely taken portrait, Roger!
Good to hear you've got yourself a macro lens!
Best regards, Chris
P.S. Thanks for your kind comments!
