Lovely image. I like it more than the one of the girl hanging from a limb. More mystery and enchantment here. The other has moood contrasts {playful} & mysterious softness which to me dont fit as well as this image.
Great portfolio. 2nd time thru it. Many magnificent images.

Still have to see the saturated version, but the one where you let the girl red and the rest b&w is better indeed! This photo is still magical, but the red cape adds so much more to the picture!

Wow ! What a great photo - and what a stimulating discussion. I will play devil?s advocate here: for my feeling, the B&W is a clear winner. Why ? Just BECAUSE the red does not stand out so much in B&W (yes, Ian and Carlos ! sorry, Hugo). And because the wooden tones and the grass and foliage tones are more uniform the shot has much more mystery than in color. I am a friend of color, but here I vote for B&W ! the nature of image, the mystery of the picture demands B&W.
I know nothing about fairies, but I believe they need to be discrete to be effective and should come at you slowly and subtly.
In color the little fairy becomes a ?vain? little fairy, loudly calling attention to her red cape - a fashion shoot for fairies not what the picture is about?

Now I am really stuck between the colour and the B&W. From the thumbnail I just knew I was going to struggle - and I really cannot decide between them both. The toning again is just wonderful Toni :-)

Thanks Rebecca. I actually did play with the desaturation but chose to post this one. I liked your suggestion and how it came out. This rendition appealed to me very much and I did some BW dodging, burning, hazing, etc. on it, similar to what I did in Youth. I plan to print all the versions for myself. I will reply to you again with a copy of the modify you suggested, as it's cool. :) THANK YOU!

Never fear, Hugo. I don't want you to ever hold back with me. Your critique was well-taken. Your comment about the influx of BW with digital and the attitudes towards it ring true. That opinion has been banging around in my brain for some time now and I've never heard mention of it before. Sometimes I feel compelled to convert to BW for just the reason you mentioned. It isn't uncommon to get suggestions to convert when a color image is posted. That happened with another image that I thought screamed to be left in color (My Son). As it happens, I agree that this one is excellent in color and that is why I chose to put it up that way the first time. Anyway, I really want to take my work to the next level, and I need feedback like yours, and am capable of balancing it with my own tastes. Nothing personal taken. Cheers! :) T.

I love this image any way that you present it, but the reason I suggested desaturation but leaving some color so the red would still show, is because the red was an eye catcher! Try desaturation about half way, and watch the reds..see what happens.

I didn't regognize the girl untill I open up the photo...perhaps it would give the picture a nice effect if her dress was still red..
I like the B/W though...cause it gives the photo a kind of mystic...

Hi Toni, I'm not sure this works as powerfully as it does in colour, but that's a long story. Especially since digital became a common mean in photography, I think the value of B&W has become way overrated. I sometimes get a feeling, people think B&W conversions have become a kind of garantee for an artistic image, seemingly creating the mood, drama and atmosphere. And with some photos that obviously is the case, but I don't think it's a guarantee. I guess all I'm saying is that B&W conversions should be carefully (and appropriately) applied, which is not always the case.
Having seen the colour version, in which the red acted as a perfect eye catcher, managing to grab and hold the viewers attention, surrounded by the deep earthy tones and atmospehere of the forrest, I don't see how that can possibly be improved by converting it to B&W. It does not change the quality of this photo, though, only the atmosphere, and I do think the B&W only removes the magic of the colour version, not enhancing it.
