About I've seen quite a few very impressive detail shots of a more clean and abstract nature than what I usually post on UF, but which I found very inspiring.

This triptych was composed as three individual images, gradually telling more about the subject. Now, there's nothing left to the imagination, except for maybe the right side of the car...:)

PS work: Other than frame: None.

Actual camera settings:
ISO 200
Shutter speed: 1/45?
Aperture: f/16

All comments are, as usual, very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Barry, Yeah, i'm really proud to admit it's mine... Driving one is a childhoods dream come true. I couldn't agree with mr. Setright more! Launced in 1955, it was in production (undergoing two facelifts) untill 1975, and only now the turning headlights are being reintroduced, and there's nothing like the hydraulic suspension.... Such a delight to drive!

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Fantastic car and some great images. Is this your own DS? They're such an amazing shape and were so advanced. LJK Setright, one of the UK's most revered motoring scribes still believes that accepting improvements in electronics and tyres, that could be retrospectively applied to the DS, this car remains the most advanced in the history of the automobile. It's hard to argue that its shape has been surpassed.

Hugo,
I like your concept of building drama within a tryptich, especially since you reveal each image one by one. It really works for me and adds a lot to the impact of each one taken individually. Incidentally, haven kept the lights on here was a good idea. It sort of give life to the thing.

Hi Roger, The weird thing is, you either love it, or hate it. One of my first recollections is how the hydrolic suspension elevates the car after starting the engine... My dad used to drive one when I was about 3 y/o.... Although too early to fully register it at that time, Driving and owning one has been one of my dreams for quite some time... It definately is a delight to drive. Even in '73, it was well ahead of its time. Thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Lukasz, The turning headlights, in line with the front tires, do add a bit of dynamism to this shot, I believe. But I think the slight slant in the surface also plays a quite important role. Thanks for your comment and analysis!

Hi Sérgio, What did you study? What you describe sounds pretty much alike what we had to do when I was studying Industrial Design... An excellent assignment to visualise and elaborate on the subtle differences between shapes and the interaction between them, in order to create a unity between them. It also stimulates creativity.

I did get lucky with those clouds, but in all fairness, it was something I only noticed after I had taken these shots....

Thanks for your elaborate comment! I really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Thilo, thanks for your comment; I like your phrasing; "full frontal nudie...". I guess it does apply. It's what you get when playing with toys for boys...:) An, I promise you, there are more to come, which will also answer your suggestion on the hight of the camera.

With the distiguishable shape of the nose, I opted for this lower camera position, trying to place the attention to that area. You have a point, though. A higher POV would also work.

I know you don't rate, nor do I expect you to, your constructive comments are much more valuable than a figure...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Tom, thanks for your comment; you have a good point about the originality of this shot; it's not very innovative, but with the tilt, I do believe it's one of the most distinguishable angles one can take of the DS....

Only fifth, heh? Oh well, everything is subjective, especially in rating design ...;)

Cheers,

Hugo

What I like most about this image is that it is far from a static image that merely shows the car's details...this one implies motion and power and even perhaps speed. The clouds add to the drama. Quite a success!!

Excellent series Hugo,
Not entirely sure whick one I like the best!
A very sharp car indeed. I would love to see the whole car from the side, only because I don't think I've ever seen one of these. (but that would be static I know)
So, this composition is REALLY GOOD!

Love the color of the headlights against the steel gray color.

Very nice and impressive work Hugo,
Lori ;)

As I remarked on an ealier member of this series, one of the few cars I really fell loved at first sight. A great ride, too! I therefore love this photo... the angle and perspective of which really capture the essence of this unique car.

P.S. BTW ... I have a new image up where there used to be alot of different kinds of cars ... Makes, Models, Years , Etc. are unknown, but their head lights and tail lights have been captured ... so maybe you might want to critique it for me ...

It's called ... "Going Downtown"

Thanks in advance!

Dear Failed Friend,

If you are going to photograph a vehicle in it's absolute glory or otherwise such as per the attached then let's do so in a very 'Classical Way' that I and/or perhaps anyone else might really appreciate with long-standing-effect ...

I do indeed regard your efforts though even that it has taken three instances now with intense study to try to impress me to somewhat of an average degree.

Thanks for sharing nevertheless and Best of Regards!

This car is really a car with character, his exterieur is as extravagant as his interieur is comfortable.I remember a drive with this car,and that I felt like in a settee. What astonishes me,is that the lights are seemimgly turning in the same direction,as the rails.
An excellent hommage for a beautiful and unusual car.

A classic view of a classic car...definitely looks like a advertisement for the car.. like that you left the lights on when you took the photo.. This is one of those images I wonder how a fisheye lens would work... nicely captured...

really like this shot Hugo!
great composition - your choice of the focal point is excellent;
like that the wheel and reflectors are turned right - it leads my eyes to the left and adds more dynamism to the shot (which otherwise would be stable IMHO);
great sharpness and colors as well;
great work
regards and take care

Sérgio Vieira   {K:3384} 11/22/2004
hi hugo,

this last triptych of yours reminds me my first college assingnement: we had to decompose and recompose the 3 basic shapes in order that, in the end each composition could be referred to the original.
this 'goddess' of your's it's definetly not a basic shape but it sure is a pure one and in all these photographs you show all there is to show about it... and you tell much more.
they all have an superb graphical quality to them, but the most important is that brilliant synthesis each one of them has.

in this one the thing i admire most is how you managed to almost invert the shape of the car with that hole in the clouds. it creates this dynamic symettry that does a lot to accentuate the perspective.
also love the way we can see that rotating headlight at the same angle as the tire.

congrats for this top notch triptych! =)

best regards,
sérgio

Hugo, I love it! And I'm not even too interested in cars, so you must have made this extra well! ;-) Seriously, this is so much more than a car, it's kind of... personality! And the light is GREAT! So are the reflections... I can see the environment reflecting on the cars side and it looks really cool!

Hi Hugo,

excellent full frontal nudie of this car. great wide angle usage, and the inclusion of the wonderful sky adds an impressive level of interest to the image. the triptych is wisely composed, worked out quite well for me.

the only thing I think about is the actual height of the camera. not sure if a slighty higher position could bring in some more interesting details of the cars' roof.

anyway, good one. (I don't rate if you ask - not trusting the system =)

ah, the classic shot! very nice, hugo. probably because i've seen similar shots before this one is not quite as eye catching as the first 2. i do, however, like the tilt. it keeps that alien, avant-garde french look to the car. well done!

take care,
tom

ps - i forgot to tell you: i saw a show on the speed channel a few days ago called ultimate cars. it's a series where they pick the top 5 cars in different "categories". this one was beauty and the DS came in 5th! very cool show. the others, in case you're curious, were: 4- aston martin DB5, 3- ferrari dino, 2- i forget, but it was tied with the '56 (?) mercedes 300-SL (gullwing), and 1- the teardop bugatti

There certainly are a lot of possibilities with this car, especially in the reflection department. I suppose some of that was covered in the earlier frames, but the hints at the sky and the landscape around this car as suggested in its paint are very nice to me. Putting the headlight front and center is a good idea to me as it emphasizes one of the very distinctive features of this Citroen.
