Chris,
I think the reason I feel tension here is because the ground line drops from a high poit on the left to a low point on the right. This is probably natural. The coastline emphasises this line. The houses in the harbour are set at a different angle, perpendicular yes, but at a different angel.
I think its an optical illusion to be honest, its something which just takes the edge off it for me. Theres nothing you can do about it its natural, and faithfully recorded.
The image is still a very good image.
Regards
Keith

Hi Chris, the harbour heads create a nice closed composition, getting carried away: like two arms trying to protect its siblings... (metaphorically, ofcourse) It keeps the eye in the lower part of the image, and might make the background redundant, but it also creates the diversity of this shot which makes it interesting. Well composed... And a D100, too! Great choice...;o) I'm learning to love mine...
Great clarity and perfect tones. Great shot!
Cheers,
Hugo

Keith, Thanks for the comment, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the horizon. Certainly if you look out to sea, to the point where the sea meets the sky, then that line should be straight and flat ~ that goes without saying. But if you're looking at a coastline that bends and twists, (especially from a vantage point several hundred feet in the air), why should it look straight and flat when you take a picture of it?!!
I blew this picture up to 100% in Photoshop and the walls of all the houses, on both sides of the water, are absolutely perpendicular. That's good enough for me!!
Kind regards, Chris

Chris, have Nikon said how long it will be ? - my Canon was was away for nearly 6 weeks when I broke the mirror. Don't want to worry you !
As for this image, its a very nice postcard style shot, but theres a tension between the horizon and the houses in the fore/mid ground. I get the impression that the horizon is not level, but then if that were level the houses would slide away. I can't work out which is best, maybe thats why you chose the middle way.

keith
