About This is a lucky shot really, it was a group of 4 gulls in a flock of 50 or more.

When I was looking at it in PX I realised that all 4 had different wing positions, and that they are in sequence from right to left - as though the one on the right is leading, and the others are following.

Peculiar.

I'm surprised that I have not yet commented on this oustanding photo of yours, Ade.
My "Ship railing and reflection" seems to resemble a Roarsach ink blot test, reminding different poeple of different things.
Thanks for commenting on it.

Rafi

I agree it may help to reduce the image a little bit, what also may help to resolve more detail is to use a less severe compression. I think it is too high in this image, I can see little wrinkles around the gulls which are JPEG artefacts. (The file size is only 17 kB, which is very small for an image of 800 pixels width).

Great capture, would not consider it a lucky shot, because you made the decision for framing it like this... And framing is everything here.

using only 1/4 of the frame in a crop is putting a strain on the resolving power of the camera. I had guessed as much.

Try something like 640 square with some USM and It sould be able to extract the last little bits of detail available.... I think

A very simple shot, that was nicely seen, and PERFECTLY framed! Way to go!!
Hey, Ade, I'd guess that most wildlife and street shots are all about 'luck' and just being in the right place at that moment. The skill is in knowing when to press the button. ;)

It's cropped to about a 1/4 of the original frame, then resized down to 800 pixels to get it onto this site Brad - so that may explain some of the softness.

I think the conditions of the day didn't help as it was really bright and I was shooting almost into the sun.

Actually, just found the original - see if you can spot these 4 :-)

I desagree it is not a matter of luck, it is a matter of eye and you have it. It is a very good picture but too soft. Composition is perfect, looks like several pictures edited in one.

looks like you are right at the limits of the cameras ability to resolve detail due to the crop. As a result the image looks a little soft I would suggest that you reduce the image size a bit in PS to help salvage the very fine detail a little more.

Excellent capture though. I like the balance
