Location City -  Near Duzaj
State -
Country - Iran   Iran
About The little vilage of Duzaj, about 150 km south west of Tehran was struck by a severe earthquake in 1964. The relief worksers from all over the world not only rebuild the village on a hill, 800 m from the original spot, but also taught the vilagers how to change to a more sustainable agriculture in the barren desert. To date, the locals grow Dutch potatoes. It's almost unbelievable that anything would grow in this remote, forbidding place.

When we drove up to Duzaj, through the uninhabited desert, we passed a few villages, as abandoned as the rest of the landscape. During the winter, the peasants flee to Tehran, only to return when the brief spring has settled in and the snow has disappeared. Spring is short, apparently only a few weeks, before the hot, suffocating summer starts.

This shot was taken in February. The increasing strenght of the sun is sure sign of spring, but at 7 degrees Celsius with a freezing stiff wind, it was quite unplesant to venture out of the safety of our car.

Your comments, as usual, are very appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,
Very interesting photo. The format transmit what you intended to say, "the distance and the geographic elements", nice chosen.
The vilage, the houses, don't seem to be real, I don't know why.

Cheers

Feeling alone on this long winding road yet now the feeling of desolation ends abruptly to be replaced by awestruck wonder at the majestic snow-covered peaks and the warm inviting village. The light on the foreground hills is mood elevating. Well done!

Hi Graham, thanks for your comment. Interesting thought, I hadn't concidered that option yet. Thanks for pointing it out, I see what you mean, and how it opens up the composition. Definately an eye-opener, thanks!

This is a stunning place Hugo and I love the colours and shades and the snow.
I find though the road leads my eye out of the image. Just crop out the road and the fold in the ground leads straight up to the village.
Regards,
Graham.

excellent landscape and beautiful view ... love the colors.. the village adds a lot to this image esp with the mountains in the background..
The sky seems a little washed out.. probably because of the time of year and there seems to be some noise in the photo.. is that from your scanner? nicely composed photo.. hope you stayed warm :)

Very nice Hugo.
Multi composition. I like allot.
Good earth colors with some ruins (homes ?) as a background and as a background to them are some small mountains and as a background for all that... some beautiful snowy mountains.
whew....all in one picture.
Very good composition, and good capture as well.
My complements.

What a fantastic mood, again! If I wouldn't have read your interesting text above I wouldn't have been able to guess if it's warm or cold... It's such a mix of strong heat in foreground and ice cold hills in background! I love the curly roads, so tastefully composed, and with so lovely light on the brown ground!

The vertical composition, the serpentine road, the layers and bands of tones and colors ? all contribute to this excellent image.

Hi Verena,

We had a UN driver and interpretator, and we needed one, too...;o) Not a place to venture out by yourself, and we were glad we had a Single Side band radio on board, as there were no signs in the middle of nowhere and the village of Duzaj is not even on the road map....

See attached!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi dear friend,

it was such a pleasure for me to really meet you face to face, not being only virtual partners in inspiring web discussions. Hope to see you again in October in Düsseldorf.

About this shot, first I agree with Antonio about some fluff on the negative, pretty sure you are aware of them ;)

What a great chance to come to a country far away from any tourists and discover it on your very personal way.

Were this shots taken when you hired a car and drove on your own? Only driving and seeing where it brings you to.

Sad that the inhabitants leave this area in winter, kind of ghost village.

The snowy mountains looks peaceful. Cannot imagine that a few weeks later it is more desert than anything else!

Cheers,
Verena

Hi Hugo, been away for a couple of days but back now! There have already been a lot of comments on the quality of the scan etc so i won't comment on that, except to say on the thumbnail it looks great, but the larger i look at it then the more i notice the small imperfections. My comment is that the winding road invites me to look to the right (and go with it/follow it, if you know what i mean) but the framing keeps me restricted and keeps bringing me back to the middle, this pattern repeats itself again with the next turn in the road. I have a little conflict there :) I understand that a horizontal version wasn't better and we can't always choose what we would like :) Anway despite all that - i like it :)
Best wishes - Neil

Super shot, Hugo!
The focus seems just a little 'soft', but that could simply be down to the scan.
I love the different bands of colour running through the shot.
Kind regards, Chris

marvelous image Hugo! think this is the more beautiful and the more dramatic of the two! but not by too much... went out today and bought a 70- 300 AF zoom Lens the Nikon D70, also got a nice case to carry all of it around in! now I am as 'broke' as a poor church mouse.. but I guess there are far worse things in the world to spend your money on then a nice camera and the necessary components to go along with it?? hope to go shooting tomorrow in fact! best regards....jon

So that is behind the hill! Also this image has a well balanced composition, with a strong layered build up. And a true point of interest :) The snow covered mountains make the finishing touch. I would like to see the foreground a little bit sharper (I guess the softness is due to the scan, because you chose a small aperture the DOF should be sufficient).

Hi Hugo,

Very interesting subject and composition. I like the portrait form to this. In lanscape it would not be complete. I think the effect of the different blobs are very interesting and you took a wonderful real abstract pick here.

hugo, wow! the color gradients are amazing. shifting from darker, earthier tones at the bottom to almost white at the top in clear "steps". this is my favorite of the series. i specially like the "double horizon" as thilo put it. the winding road leads me right to the rustic and almost stone age-looking town with those pillowy mountains in the background. only thing that bugs me a bit here is the grain. bit too much i think. lab or scanner issue? excellent shot, regardless.

take care,
tom

Hi Christian, Interesting thought, that the road that disappears and then reappears might be considered a distraction. I hadn't noticed it that way yet, but you do have a point.

The reason I like that element in this shot, is because I think it adds to the tension, as it leaves the "missing" part of the road to the imagination of the viewer.

Intersting thing, how tension in a photo can also be considered a a distraction. Thanks for pointing it out!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Carmen, Thanks for your comment, and you should give yourself more credit than reffering to it as "beginner work". Much more credit....;o)

The lousy quality is mainly caused by the print, which was made in the wrong shop in Iran, as I needed prints quiclky, and not so much by the sensitivity of the film. I lik the crop you suggest, that would definately be an improvement...

Cheers,

Hugo

Beautiful composition and colors. Lovely image.

Christian Barrette   {K:21125} 5/28/2004
I like this one a lot, mainly beacause of the juxtaposition of the multiple levels. The white mountains loosing themselves in the sky are pure magic. I would not insist on revealing them too much, I think it's a pleasure to discover them late in the image browsing. So, if you would beef up the contrast, try not to apply the porcess to that part.
The road that we loose, and then rediscover... that may be felt as a distraction. But I don't think it weigths that much in my appreciation.

Hi Hugo.. excellent composition, as previous.. there is little noise.. but I think it?s caused by iso 400 + scanning..
I?d crop bellow a bit to get the same road "movement" than previous peicture

As you probably noticed.. I had a problem to my PC.. that?s the reason I?ve replied twice to your comment..
Thank you again for devoting your time and atention to my beginner work.
Cheers!

While photographer is about reacting fast enough to capture the right moment, landscape photography is mostly about waiting for the right moment,Isay mostly because unless you are on the trail of twister or some other exceptional weather phenom.,most landscape shots are pretty static shots of nature and cityscapes. With landscape no hurry, take your time try different composition and techniques,or wait for the right light or time to shot unless you are travelling and you do not have choice..1-As the road zig zag shaping it is correct vertical shot"portrait",correct composition 'cos a lot of colours and light variation,,2- Most of the photographer common error saying POOR QUALITY SHOT when they mean POOR QUALITY PRINT.
This shot of outstanding quality and poor print quality..this image need to adjust,,sky contrast, lines of poor print and light bit of dark area, cheers, Saeed

Hi Hugo... I love this beautiful landscape... it's a shame the poor quality of the print (which everybody has mentioned). I love how the highway takes you firs to the village and next to the awsome mountains.... I like very much the contrast showed between the the snow and the terrain in the foreground... The compostion is really beautiful... a it tells its story...

Hi Gino, Thanks for your comment, I know the quality of this shot is very poor... I had the film developed in Iran, and I guess I picked the wrong store. (in the google translation, It gives "peccato the scansion", which I don't quite understand, so I can't reply on that. I do appreciate that you like the aesthetic aspects of the composition... Thanks, my friend!

Hi Hugo!
The first point ilooked at, was the village, because the way was leading me to it. The second thing were the mountains, so beautiful, covered with snow and wonderful lines. Very strong picture, but the scan didn't do it much good.

Thilo Bayer Thilo Bayer   {K:50358} 5/27/2004
Hugo, this shot creates definitely more tension with me than the more deserted one. reason: I have seen such subjects by myself and therefore have some experience and emotions for that kind of picture. the double horizon with the mountains and the snowy silhouette is very strong. the pathway leads the eyes to the hills and creates a lot of depth. minor things: I tend to recognize too much blue in the picture ;-) perhaps you can do something to relief that if it wasn't by intention. Antonio mentioned the hair. And I think you should add some more beef to the darker tones. cheers and great shot, thilo

  0

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 5/27/2004
Hi Antonio, you are absolutely right. I should've paid more attention to the imperfections of the scan / film.... The reason I took this shot in its current portrait format is that the hills on either side didn't show much more, and were frankly ugly. Secondly, I tried to emphasise the distance and the geographic elements of the road leading down towards the village. The emptiness of this barren landscape is also shown in photos I and III of this triptych (the last still to come).

Thanks for your comment, very constructive and useful!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo, the path created by the road is great here; I do not know why you choose this vertical size, I wonder if an horizontal one could be better here, some imperfection in the upper left corner in the sky could be easily removed as well the one white hair (I suppose on the film) in the right bottom corner, just on the road starting; intriguing place though
