About First of all, I would like to thank everybody who commented on the previous one for their advise. Your constructive comments are what makes Usefilm so excellent. This is (obviously) another fill flash shot, with slow shutter and a flash on the rear curtain. I wonder if this is more to your liking. The DOF and composition seem less of an item to me, but I do wonder what you think...

Actual settings:
Exposure 1/4 sec
Aperture f/4.8
Exposure Comp: 0 EV
Flash: SB-800
Flash Sync mode: Rear Curtain
Flash Comp -0,5 EV
Flash Sync speed 1/60' sec.

Some PS rework (felt I had to clone out my other camera....) and Neat image to get rid of some noise.

To Lori... This is Eric van Houtum, another Usefilm Member. I could've added this to the Pictures of our members project, but I think it's more of a Blurry image. In retrospect to the previous one, where the girl in the photo tried to evade my camera, Eric and his girlfriend seemed to enjoy the attention. I got lucky on this one, though...

http://www.usefilm.com/photographer/54590.html

All comments are, as usual, very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo

I love this photo! There is so much action and movement! Being an amateur I have no idea how you produced this effect, but a couple of specifics that I find distracting.
First and foremost, the orange line under her arm.
The second thing is the bright light in the centre of his head. I don't know if they could be removed, but just an idea.

Very original idea dear Hugo!
Unusual usage of long exp. Fantastic result!
The sharp contures are fantastic ones.
You are a Wizzard!
I is unbelievable, like a photoart or something...

I like the situation, they are dancing in their own special aura. They are not dealing with the others and vica versa.

Cheers Radįk

This is the very best one from the tripwich, to my opinion. The motion and fire of the dance are cought on film and that's a hard job! It's fun, they look like ghosts wirling through a strange party.
I like this and still have to try some for myself! It's on the scadule.
Greets Tim.

Nice one, Hugo! Very interesting movement and feeling! I also like how you composed it, and this kind of flash looks million times better than "normal" flash. But what is that strange white line around there hands? And between her back and her dress?

Hugo OUTSTANDING shot indeed!!!! The rich colors and movement is amazing - I love the ghost effect of the dancers and the window coming through - You have really capture the party atmosphere along with an insight to the interaction of this couple. I love that the shot is in color -- so much more depth than if it was BW -- into my favorites - you should be very proud on this one - it's perfection regarding your "theme" -- vision...Kind Regards, Cindi

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 8/8/2004
Hi C. You're right about the burning ear, the red streak is the motion effect of heart shaped light from the first shot. I would've preferred it if it was swiched off, though. On the other hand, it fits with the other shots of that evening, where the lights created a consistent line in all shots I used for the couple's wedding album. Of course, that doesn't show in a single shot. (not even two or three). I'm sure you understand what I mean.

As to the camera, I took the majority of shots with my F100, and the results show a consistent higher quality. Beats me why, though. Apparently, the settings between analogue and digital cannot be converted 1:1. I would not choose a B&W film for this kind of shots, as the discolouration due to long exposure times, and the effect of the artificial lighting can only show in colour. I have another (similar) triptych in my portfolio, that shows the stage lights more clearly:

http://www.usefilm.com/image/286306.html
http://www.usefilm.com/image/286260.html
http://www.usefilm.com/image/286148.html

I don't think T-Max, although a great film would've worked in this case (the grain would be excellent! With film, I used NPH 400. Pushing the film by one stop is also a great idea.If choosing a 800 asa film, I'd go for the Fuji Press. And if you are adamant on B&W, I think even Ilford delta 3200 will work, but that would make the shutterspeed of 1/15 - 1/30 a bit slow. In that case I'd pull the film back to 800. 50 mm? Yes. Will work definately. Obviously depends on the subject. With aperture wide open, I'd say over exposure is unavoidable. f/8 is more like it, especiallty with 800 ASA....

The third is due soon....

For the full insight, the blur in this image is partially PS induced, dual layer, blurred lower level, with eraser tool.... Maybe one of the drawbacks of Digital, even DSLR. With my F100, I seem to be able to use a smaller aperture. Possibly the 1.5 magnification factor of the D100's CCD has something to do with that.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Christine, I love the atmosphere you describe.... Reading that, and your comment on the previous one, I think you'll like the next one too, as that's the complete embodyment of the image you've sketched.... By far the most poetic comment I've ever received... Thank you very much!

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 8/8/2004
Hi Thilo, thanks for your comment. I agree this image fails in the details, as there are quite a few glitches. I already reduced most of the grain working with two layers, but omitted the lower right, you're right about that. Thanks!

The noise is also something why I prefer to take this shot with film. For some unknown reason, the quality of fill flash shots with slow shutter speeds tends to be more consistent (and better) when I use film.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 8/8/2004
Hi Carmem, The sharpened lines are unintended. I needed to get rid of some noise, and tried Neat image (for the first time) It's neat image that caused the oversharpening, and it bugs me too. The compression shouldn't be a problem, as long as you only save it as a JPEG once. (meaning, I never edit a JPEG image. I shoot in RAW mode, and convert it to TIFF. That way, compression errors are neglectible, even in print.

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

You open the front doors of an old vacant mansion. You walk down the corridor with the gorgeous spiral oak staircase and at the end of the hall are double french doors. You throw both open and suddenly all your senses are filled with a bygone era. You can hear the piano music, satin gowns making that delightful swishing sound, diamonds glinting from the light cast by the chandeliers. The air is filled with the scent of jasmine. Servants rush about with trays held high filling crystal goblets. That is the picture that comes to me when I look at this image. Well done Hugo!

Dear Hugo,

a lot has said here, most of what I planned to say. I tested a lot with rear curtrain flash lights this weekend, and I really appreciate this one. adds a lot of dynamics here, even with a flash. you may work on the the small glitches (as carlheinz mentioned), but otherwise I really like this shot. you may work on the grain on the lower right.

well done!
cheers,

Hi, Hugo!
Another creative work.. perfect for the project #45.
There are some sharpened lines on their clothes that I don?t know if were intentional.. or are caused by compression.. This loss of definition is bothering in my work, that?s the reason I notice them.. I don?t think they are important, here. Anyway, I?ve rated it 7.
I?m trying to get back.. after a PC?s catastrophe...
I?ll comment your other photo as soon as possible.
Thank you for keeping in touch!
Carmem

Mmmmmhmmmm!!!
The subjects is great! The couple dancing and forgetting the rest of the world. The background fades out in blur.
I'm pretty sure, that you struggle with the burning ear and the red fire balls, too.
The goast like glowing is a intersting effect.
I like the focused main subject on this one but I like also the chaos like comp on the first one.
This is a field of photography I've never touched. It's interesting and I don't like to judge it. I just like to wait and see.

I learn a lot from images by thinking: How would it look like if you would have done...
In that case: A analog camera, with a 50mm 1.X, T-Max 400, maybe pushed one stop, on a tripod (this is an imagination; we're not talking about reality!), aperture wide open and a speed of 1/15-1/30??? Or we take a kodak color 800?

Howerver, this is interesting and I'm looking forward to see more stuff. C.

Hi Hugo, i like this one much better. I think it is more harmonius in the composition. Nice and dynamic adn i particularly like the holding hands at the front and again in the background. It joins the two peopple (Eric and girlfriend) in a nice way, fitting for a wedding :)
I don't like the white lines, caused by "Neat Image" as you've mentioned...so no need to go into that :) All in all a very good action shot Hugo, my congrats.

Fabulous photo Hugo, I have just realised how much more I still have to learn regarding curtain synching. The Olympus C8080 offers several variations - guess I am going to have to start playing (once someone can drag me away from macros lol)

  0

Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 8/7/2004
It's a little hard to make a specific comment on one image as opposed to general comments on the entire series, since there is a measure of the accidental in pictures produced with this technique. In general, this series shows motion in an exciting manner, pushing the two dimensional still image to reveal more than it was meant to. Then, when you harvest the images thus produced, you have to edit them to see which ones you like (of course, you do that with all photography) and can work with to produce your vision.

Seeing your rear curtain synch pictures makes me want to try it. For that, I will have to purchase a flash!

Hermen Pen Hermen Pen   {K:9168} 8/7/2004
Hi Hugo, I like this image better than the previous one in this series. Here your subject is sharp and the background is blurred - makes the image quiter and more pleasing to look at for me. The only distracting elements are the very bright spots - the red glowing 'heart', the light in Eric's ear and the bright window frame. The latter may be due to a bouncing flash ?
What I alsk like is that the motion blur is coupled to your subject here, which is nice. In your previous image it was just a vague veil covering the left side of the image, but here it has a function, it shows how the two are dancing.

Saeed Al Shamsi Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47735} 8/7/2004
Action photography, I think it means something different to every one, used to refer to sports photographers now a days it is a gallery by its own,, I like the life sense here, it gives you the true action, the most attractive part is the blurry or a soft double image, which is the subject here, but the lights around every where created by slow shutter speed is a bit too much.. though of great clarity and amazing net elements, a hot shot,, SAeed

  0

John Hatziemmanouil   {K:40580} 8/7/2004
Like gosts! The result of strong - fastly motion and a click long exposure even (at some times) lese slow than the 1/15 could have impressive results! What a great transperacity at the duncer's shapes! Even this red light does not works so nicely at the woman's shape. Anyway, there was not only these people they moving when you take the shot. I like it.

  0

John Bohner   {K:8368} 8/7/2004
Hugo - These sorts of exploratory things are fun. I have to say I would love to merge these last two efforts and take the best of each. This image's composition is more pleasing to me even though I don't like the window frame in Eric's head. What really bugs me is bright red in the girl's armpit and the bright gold on Eric's ear. On a more philosophical note, would a study of usefilm images show that most men do not smile while dancing? Eric seems to be concentrating on getting it right. Where as I suspect than most women will be seen simply having fun and smiling.
Thanks for continuing to push the envelope. - john

Hi Hugo,

This is really great... I like it more than the previous one... You captured their movement incredibly... What captures most my attention is the movement of the hair... The person smoking gives it an spectral touch...

It is the kind of picture that makes me look again and again just to find out another details that were no there a moment before... I do not know if you can call this distracting... I better shall say it is entertaining... What I feel at time is that the flares distract me a bit... Once again, I'm only babbling what I'm feeling...

Overall, I like it very much... You are playing around really well...

Cheers,

Maria

Hi Lori, As you've already seen the third one (the waitress with the beer) I'm wondering which one you prefer of the three.... No rush, as I haven't posted that one yet.

The outlining of her dress and the top of his hand are partially a Neat Image thing. It's been only a few times I've used that program before, and I am still figuring out how it works.

Just curious, what rating did you give this image? I see a 5.3 for this one....

Cheers,

Hugo

OH yes,

Hugo, this one is much better....or rather I should say, I prefer this one more!!

They are really having fun!! I like seeing more in the frame, and seeing 'further into the frame'!

I like the coloring on this one. Just MORE to see, and the movement of her hair and their arms, GREAT, I'm sure the briday couple will also love this one.

Why the line outlining her dress and the top of his hand and bottom of shirt...? Did Neat Image do that?? (just curious) :)

Overall, yes, I like it!!

Lori :)
