hi mark,

1080 views, okay there must be something special ;-)

to be honest: this is some of the coolest pictures here at usefilm. it breathes understatement with every pixel. the tonal range together with the shadows really make this image. and we have a cat, definitely a good argument to make an image a winner. So I probably didn't say too much new stuff here, just: yes, this is awesome good stuff.

best wishes,

thilo

Susan, I'll be looking forward to seeing your future large format work, that's for sure!
And the hundred mile drive shows dedication, wow.

Mark,
Tom and I are going to try to cover the view camera and medium format in the next few months. I need more dark room practice too; haven't fallen in love with the dark room yet. I live nearly 100 miles away from Tom, so weekends, when we train, are pretty intense.

Tom, I'm so pleased you took the time, and also to mention about Susan. I think it's so much better to learn the Zone System firsthand, in person from another. And after some years, it becomes intuitive, as Ansel once mentioned about Edward Weston. Ed learned it empirically, while Ansel was the scientific one; sort of like a classically trained pianist (that Ansel was) compared to one who plays by ear (in this case, Ed Weston). Oh, how I miss my view camera!
Warm Regards,

Mark

Beautiful work Mark. Technically excellent. A student of mine, Susan Cropper mentioned she is studying The Zone System in her comment. Your photograph really hit home with her. Again, beautiful work.

Mark Beltran   {K:32612} 10/20/2004
Thanks, Susan. Tri-X Pan Film has such great exposure lattitude, that the photograph didn't require much in the way of dodging or burning. I only burned in areas on the right side, where the shadows are. It's good to know there are still some people who are taking the time to understand the zone system. It really gives you a more rounded understanding of exposure and the scales of grey, black, and white. Warm Regards,

Mark

I've been studying the zone system. I can really appreciate the technical perfection of this composition. Such a simple subject, but what a complex photo. Beautiful cat.

It is easy to lose objectivity about your own cat and do cutesy, cliched portraits, just as it is easy to do the same with your own kids. I've done my fair share of bad cat and kid photos. But this is really an exceptional shot. The use of B&W, the creative composition, the sense of simple open space, and the shadows and light all create a very powerful mood. Maybe this is the best cat portrait I've ever seen because it is so much more than a "cat portrait." And finally I'm sorry Sarah is not here anymore.

there's nothing likes these bright souls who are better than most people you will ever meet. It's easy to tell she loved you very much as the sunslight illuminates Sarah upon a little stool as she beams back at you. I wish you well...

They say cats have a great aesthetic sense. Sarah placed herself in just the right spot to allow you to take credit for this well-compsed, well-lit image. Has lots of classic virtues - very nice indeed. Congrats.

Lovely cat photo! I like how the sun shines on her! Great catch! Your cat had style! I feel for you about your cat. When my previous cat died, I was so heartbroken, I didn't want another one, but Kees took me to the animal shelter two days later to pick out a cat, who is 7 years old now. It worked for me, but everyone's different.
I hope another cat finds herself/himself into your life soon! Congratulations on staff choice!!

Mark; yes they certainly do become part of the fabric of ones life. we've had two cats-- each for about 10 years and spoiled them rotten-- that's what they're for right. We now have a 3rd and just as cool in her own way. Wonderful lighting and very homey setting-- in front of the refrigerator;>)-- cool. Cheers. Craig

Excellent picture, the light fall, the choise for B&W. Can't say anything negatieve or constructive about this one.
About my picture, I didn't take it horizontal becouse of the simple fact that my face would disappear behind the camera :)
Greets Tim.

Christine, they do have a dual nature, these cats. But they are deep down good inside. One thing I learned about pets is that you can't take too many pictures of them. They're only with us for a short time, so keep snapping away!

  0

Christine Campbell Christine Campbell   {K:2693} 3/12/2004
Mark, what a sweet kitty! Just like mine, lazing around in the sunniest spot in the house! I've had so many pets throughout my life and I have almost no photos of them. We just got another dog last weekend, so I'm going to have to find a way to get a photo of 2 dogs & 1 cat wrestling on the living room floor... I swear it looks like a huge ball of fluffy yarn when they do that.

I like the way you have 1/2 of her face in shadow. It speaks of the shady nature of cats! ;-)
