John Shephard summed this up well for you Greg.....with enough practice you will learn what you see and the film records are very different...yuor eye can see much broader contrast than the camera can record on film...so there is inevitably a trade off....I think you ought to try some stuff in color as it would help you see the effects of compositional organization and still get the impact of contrast....but it would be like working in "real time", since you see in color...eventually you will rationalize the colors into B&W and it would build up your understanding of cause and effect easier...

White sky and deep shadows do not help this shot. Composition needs work. Wait for the right light maybe some clouds to add texture to the background. Foreground light on the church and look for different angles.
