gotta disagree with Artie--this is a photo of a face, and I find the brick background distracting. You could move the subject several feet away from the wall and shoot wide open so the wall is out of focus. Lighting could certainly be softened although that would show her in a whole different.... light (duh). If you want tension, some edginess, this photo works. If you want to flatter the model a bit you need diffuse light as opposed to direct sun.

brick wall makes a good background for a portrait....the hard light is creating some very stark shadows on her face especially in the eye sockets...(this effect is know as racooning) a fill flash or a reflector could be used to fill in light or a gobo to block light from her to eliminate the hard light on her all together....if no reflector is available a piece of foamcore or regular white cardboard can be used to add light or a black large card to block light (gobo) from her...experiment with either chioce and see how it works for you...alternately a fill flash(your flash used at a reduced output or set less than the set apertur can be used to fill in shadows....
