About After she'd polished my shoes, this lady wasn't too sure she wanted her photograph taken (you can tell) but she says her grandchildren loved the print I gave her.

Thank you, Ismail. This was a favourite of mine and one of the first I uploaded to Usefilm. Your comment is the first one I have ever received from the troubled land of Kosova, which I understand will soon be independent. May your young nation know true peace and learn forgiveness!

nice portrait ... i like the b&w and it really works out.

John, I've noticed the high ratings this one picture of mine has attracted, and looked for it in vain among "Community favorites" and "Top rated" among "All Usefilm Pictures" (with and without restricting it to B&W) but it has never appeared for me as it did, once at least, for you! It's not the NUMBER of ratings, either; there are pictures that do appear with fewer ratings AND lower averages. I don't like to make too much fuss about this to admin but it IS disappointing... My one stab at glory...

Stranger still, it seems to have disappeared again! And the top rated image now has a lower score than this one...

As the rating system does not appear to be working yet on the new UF, I had a quick look at what was happening with "top rated" photos. And guess what popped up at number 3? Well, it looks as though it didn't get a formal award (yet, and assuming this also has not been lost in the transfer), but number 3 seems pretty good to me...
All the best, John

PS. Just seen your comment of 5 Dec 2005 - recognition at last!

Well.. I think it should have an award.. it is great!

Roger Williams Roger Williams   {K:86139} 12/5/2005
Thanks, Paul. It's a real favourite of mine, too. It did actually appear on the front page when I was "featured donor" once, but that disappeared without trace when the previous upgrade was performed in 2004. Also oddly enough, it doesn't appear in the site's "favourites" although it has enough views, ratings and a high-enough average. Wonder why?

Roger, I just saw this image that you uploaded years ago... wow, this is a great image and it should have one an award. Very strong, everything about this image is perfect. Great work and I still think that this image should be awarded..

Thank you. Yes, Joanna, that's the lady. I think I caught sight of her again the other day when I was taking photos at Shinjuku. Where do you live? I'm out on the Keio line towards Hachioji and work in central Tokyo...

I missed this one Roger but I?m so glad to see it now! Fascinating street pic and you are so right to feel this is one of your best! This perfect composition obviously sets a standard to emulate...

The slight angle allows for a glimpse of the sidewalk ? this may seem unimportant but without an about to explain the picture the detail offers the viewer a context and a richer narrative. Also admire the technical excellence you managed so well here ? the full range of b&w tones are present and succeed in fleshing out many details. The fabric of her blouse for instance is rich and interesting. Again maybe not such an important element but it adds.

We always fill in the blanks or impose our interpretations when looking at a successful photograph and here, your shoeshine lady with her sad but strong face, the resigned expression in her eyes, eyes which have probably witnessed the unimaginable? yes, one has to wonder? she was a young girl on August 6, 1945?

One to treasure Roger

My best, C

?one last thing about the about: I?m happy you gave her a print? ;-)

Than was a great thing to do Roger! I'm sure that photo will be around in 200 years and treasured.

This is a very finely detailed image, in monochrome. A superb capture in time which conveys volumes!. I'm glad your concise, and well considered critique, made front page.

I have a pic of the 'exquisite architecture' of Reyrolles in Hebburn, framed by Autumnal foliage, which I'll send you via email!!

Dearest Roger, this is a great portait! I LOVE IT!It's not the kind of photo that you can get everyday! I am amazed that such people still exist in Tokyo and at Shinjuku eki!I made it a favourite! And congratulations to have made it to the front page!!!! But you do deserve it!
A big friendly hug from Gabriela

Roger, I live in Tokyo too, and wonder if this dear lady polishes shoes in front of the Shinjuku station. If so, I have a picture of her too - but not nearly as well composed as yours.

Very beautiful portrait of this old lady. You cought her spirit and sincerity well in this photo. It was a good choice to shoot it on black and white film. The detail and focus are amazing

Superb exposure Roger, very craftily composed to avoid having intrusive background do just that.
Kindest,

Thanks, Alan! Nice to see you posting, too. It's kind of you to say this is my "usual standard" as I think it's one of my "best ever." She was a great subject! And that Heliar lens shows its wonderful qualities...

Nice to see your work again Roger, this is up to your usual competent standard; just look at those hands, the facial wrinkles. It is nice that you include the environment in which she toils daily.

Roger thanks for your comments on my shot "almost Square". This lady has a wonderful face that excudes character. This is a great shot and I understand that you were not using a camera with a zoom lens. I really think that her face cries out for a close up head shot. Using a camera with a Longish Zoom would give you DOF benefits and let you stand off and not have her feel that you had the camera jammed in her face but she could be the subject of one of those magnificent portraits in which the character jumps off the page.
