Even the dark wood preserved its texture in a fantastic way, and so it stands on a great contrast to the much stronger light on the child! If we add the fact that the expression of the child is rather neutral - it doesn't seem to care a lot about posing - then we end up with a snapshot *with* much character, which is hard to find among snapshots!
The perfect exposure of the face of the child adds the last finishing for a very special image.
