Good eye to catch this family, it's always interesting to see the family dynamics in action. Well done.

Hi Dave. Excellent shot. In Australia these are known as Swamp hens and in New Zealand they are called Pukekos by the maoris. We have a large population of them at my place of work and they usually have 2 chicks at a time. They will favour one, most likely the one facing the camera and the other has to fight for its food and survival. Rarely will the 2 survive. THe Maoris used to say that if you put one of theses birds in a pot with a rock and boiled it up you would throw it out and eat the rock - they were terrible tasting because of the muck they ate.

Interesting birds, Dave...I see Todd says they are Common Moorhens. I probably would have went with "ugly duckling"!

A pretty nice photo even under exctremely difficult lighting conditions Dave, light and shadow in so small area makes the camera don't works well at white ballance and it is also difficult to focus on that, the result is enouph good for me, I know that problem, I have many many many times however the lovely moment of the mom and the little birds is so nice, I love it!

Best regards dear Dave!

They look like pidgeons to me, Dave, but... swimming pidgeons??? The evolution goes too fast for me! ;-)

The birds, do they need more focus, or is it only the strong light and perhaps overexposure that makes them look as if the were behind some kind of haze? Anyway, such shots can be very hard to get, as they include almost unlimited dynamics. As about composition, well not much of that for me here, though I know that birds would care about photographic intentions and thus one has to be quick.

Best wishes,

Nick

Thanks for the ID, Todd! Unfortunately this was the best shot I could get, taken from a bridge, so it's a fairly large crop, as well.
Dave.

Dave,

This is a Common Moorhen and her babies. We have lots of these here in Canada too. The babies are so cute/ugly.

Cute little family gathering, I was trying to look these up but didn't see anything with a red beak. We have a goose that is here part of the year with a short neck like that. Alison
