Hi MS,
Trust all is well? Think the taste was stronger than the camera shake... :)
Cheers,

MarySue, Thanks for the comment on my reflected branch. I've been a slacker as well, in taking photos other than my son, and posting. I'm just finally getting back into the swing of things. I hope to see some more from you soon! Hope all is well!

Thanks for your comment, Kim!
No, I am not posting elsewhere...Usefilm is my only photographic home! I've been a total slacker lately - no real excuses. I stare at the camera a lot, and think about shots. Maybe this is the lull before the creative storm.
Hopefully there will be more very soon.
I agree with you regarding this shot. No idea what I did wrong, but wow is it soft in all the wrong places.
:)

Hey Mary Sue... Touching base at Usefilm and I see that you haven't posted recent pics... are you posting somewhere else? As for this shot, reading yours and Steve's interaction I see that you already know what I'm going to say. Weird that it uploaded so soft, when it obviously doesn't look like this on your computer. Hope you are well!

Steve, thanks very much for your comment. I can't believe I posted such a weak image! Blame it on holiday overload. You made some helpful suggestions, specifically about ways to position the handle and about how to make the steam more visible (hot coffee, cold air). I have this image in my head and will shoot again and play with it.
I also want to do some lens experiments just to see how different lenses treat the same subject. Not sure if it will work with this small a subject, but I'll give it a try.
Thanks again for the comment. It is very helpful.

Soft picture. A different background might make this image really pop. But I actually like the idea of the background matching the clouds in my coffee...

MarySue, when I saw this shot, I wondered why you didn't focus on the rim of the cup...... but I see you already realized that this shot is too soft in the places that really matter. I think I'd like to see the handle a bit sharper as well, or turn the cup so the handle is still visible, but obviously more in the background. As to the color of the liquid, if it were simply black coffee, you wouldn't be able to see the liquid very easily. This could be espresso with crema, or hot chocolate. You might consider trying to make the liquid hot enough to be steaming (most easily done if you can put the cup in a cool or cold place with very hot liquid). It's a nice idea, one that can be repeated easily. Keep playing with it, and I think you'll come up with some fun shots!

Oh it looks terrible here...not sure what I did. The original image on my computer definitely has a shallow DOF, but the front brim of the cup is sharp, and the background is light without being blown out.
Ick.
