Hi Mark,
A bit late, but thanks for your feedback. I think this is the strongest image in this series, mainly because of the layered effects of the colours. But maybe also because I found this one of the most impressive and awesome sights I've ever seen; the way the light hit the salt flats and moved rapidly towards us, and the consequent and almost immediate change in appearance and temperature was just breath taking.

Hi Meldijana, thanks for the comment.... The name isn't so strange when the sun hits the salt flats in the middle of the day... (it isn't water you're looking at, but salt) Very harsh and barren environment, with temperatures that reach upto 56 degrees C...

Hi Hugo - I dont know the place and was totally fooled. The time of day is perfect for this then, with the full sun on the salt it would be very difficult to balance the different elements.
".. remove the likeness with water.." The only option I can think of is to shoot at a lower angle so that the grainy texture of the salt becomes visible. I dont really think it matter though - the fact that it is salt, looking like water, make so much more interesting. Take care.

Maybe it's the tone, don't really know what I could've done to remove the likeness with water... any ideas?

Mesmerising indeed! Great landscape Hugo. I like the division of the image in 3 horisontal bands - each with its own colour tones, contrast and texture. Distinctly seperate (earth, sky & water) yet moulded together with a wonderful soft, glowing light. Eye candy!! Congratulations!

VEry nice tones here .. suberb even shades of blue and yellow. I especially like the blue strip just under the mountains. Great and well done on the award.

Just had a look at all three in this series Hugo, this one is my favourite because of the ethereal quality of the light and that the salt really looks like water in this one. Its amazing how much the light has changed in the three photos, the second one it is obvious that the 'lake' is of salt, and the light is more natural but it is a close second because I like the composition with some of the shore in the foreground. The third is also good and worthy of being in the series to show even more of the shore.

Congrats on this marvelous Staff Choice, Hugo. This shot in particular is especially deserving, though I very much like the others you have posted in this series. The light is wonderful, the haze having shown the actual crack of dawn. Masterful exposure choice, superb capture. I am glad that your early hours outdoors were so well rewarded!
This being death valley, one supposes that this is not a body of water we are looking at. So well reflected is the hue of the sky that it does appear as water. Especially the clear blue line at the foot of the mountains. Again, perfect exposure!

Hi Nick, it was freezing cold out there, until the sun peeked out above the mountains. Pretty spectacular sight, it made me feel immensly small in this overwhelming scenery. I wouldn't know if this type of sunrise is typical for the area; I got the impression that the haze was rather unexpected; but it created an awesome effect for sure!

Hi Joel, In all fairness, I didn't make the connection with water, as these saltflats are easily accessible, and we walked out there with our gear to wait for the sunset. And being out there, the textures and the solid state removed the physical reference. I did make the same mistake when I first saw the photos by Tom Rumland of this place.

Hugo, since I can't compare this with the proofing, I do as if it were the prrofing here.
The whole atmosphere feels quite cold to me, though the colors of the upcoming sunlight are warm. This generates a contrast, some kind of tension that is not very often on such photos.
The one mountain stands behind a halo and the other in front of it - another tension here.
Together with the first I get the impression of an upcoming sunlight that was not meant for this valley. Strange!
And I like strange images most of all!

I do like the higher contrast version you created, and I've toyed with that thought too. Have you seen the original version I uploaded and pasted underneath this one? I removed that one, because I wasn't satisfied with the hues, but it has approximately the same amount of contrast as your version.
Valid point, too, to bring the tone of the dark land in the foreground more in balance with the tones of the mountains. It simplifies the scene, which fits rather well with the serene atmosphere of that place.
My line of thought was to create / preserve that distance, as those mountains are quite far away in the actual scene. The lower contrast brings the mountains more to the background, I think.
Difficult one; can't really say which one I like better; guess it's fairly subjective, too.

Hope you don't mind me correcting you, but this place is actually called the "Devils' Golf Course", but it isn't a golf court. the white is a salt flat, surrounded by mud structures...:) The next two photos in this series will show you more of this bit of nature...

I think options one and two are definitely a good alternative, yet I think cropping off the salt flats in the fourth is a bit too strong, as to me, it cuts off the essence of this photo, the sun hitting the salt flats... But I see what you mean, as it does emphasise the layered background mountains very well...

If I may correct you, there's no water in this photo, what you're looking at is a salt flat with the first rays of the sun racing towards me; this lasted for less than 15 seconds, but it was absolutely spectacular!
I agree about the contrast in the one below; the colours are off too, and as taran suggests, a colour compensation tutorial would be very useful, I've noticed the change before, but not as big as in this case. I'm still not overly satisfied with the tones... Need to print this photo first to make a decent comparison, though.

For some reason my conversions are always less powerful on UF. It's not the compression artifacts that kill me however, as much as what it does to color. Maybe its because I work in ProPhoto color space, maybe its because I don't convert to SRGB, maybe its something else. Everything looks great on my monitor, and in print, but sometimes on upload here, my colors get knocked to %^$&*%@. Reds are especially susceptible to this I have noticed. UF might want to provide a tutorial, now that some of the dust has settled, which details the best way to get the most out of our images here, maybe some kind of workflow that includes extra saturation or something. Just a thought.

I like the new version very much. The sky, and water hold up much nicer, and give a much more uniform balance to the image. What's even more pronounced in this, is the shaft of light in the haze that gently rests over the background mountain.

Hugo! Congratulations on the two well deserved awards. The scene is really beautiful. The only change I might make, and its simply a matter of personal taste, would be to increase the contrast a bit. I think it would bring the tone of the dark land in the foreground more in balance with the tones of the mountains. I've attached my concept. At any rate, it's a minor point about a job well done!!

Hi Omar, thanks for the feedback. Now you mention it, I'm sure there are many crops possible. I just didn't think of cropping this image. The only thing I did is straighten the horizon, but left the composition untouched. Just curious, what other compositions did you have in mind? I'd appreciate it if you would show me what you're thinking of...

Wow, great shot, Hugo! Perfect exposure and composition. Looks a bit like the stark beauty of the arctic to some extent (or some places in the arctic) though I imagine the day time temps to be a little warmer than up there. This image captures the mood that I've felt when in Death Valley. It is the starkness of the place as well as the endless and vast horizon that makes a person feel so tiny. I love being there, but always feel a bit like I'm intruding on a place that doesn't belong to me.
In this image, I especially like the layered look of the background. Any later in the day and you are likely to have lost that soft feeling. The amount of haze in the atmosphere serves you well here.

Perfect title for this one, indeed it is magic.
I love the color of the sky, the softness quality of light, shades of the mountains.
And the silver strip in the water.
Very nice.
I viewed the image in the comments section, and I much prefer the one I'm commenting on. I think the one below is a bit too contrasty.

Truly a magic light specimen, Hugo. The light and tones are breathtaking. I'm putting sheets of white paper against my monitor experimenting with different crops, I think you could get several equally lovely shots with different crops.

Hi Amit, I visited Death Valley last month, from 22 to 28 February... And I've seen the flowers you shot too...:) Such a rugged and mesmerising place, it really made me feel small amid the vast landscape and wilderness.
i agree, it's very difficult to capture those salt flats. If you look at Tom Rumlands' photos of this place (just click the link) I think that's the best way to capture it. But then again, I believe the best way to get a grasp at the beauty of nature is to actually go there. And that's what I did after seeing Tom's photos....
The serenity of this sunset was just breath taking! I did shoot a 39 photo panoramic of the Devil's Golf Course, but Photoshop crashes when I try to stitch the images together....:(

A wonderful serene composition. Unless you say its DV, people dont relate that its salt in the f/g and not water :)
Its an enchanting place indeed. I havent faced such a challenge as DV in capturing its enormity in a single shot...hope to get it with pan-images next time.
BTW, when did you visit it?

Ha Riny, Dat klopt... Ik heb hem verwijderd, maar niet vanwege te weinig reacties, Ik vond het blauw in de bergen in de achtergrond te sterk, niet zoals ik me herrinerde, en niet wat ik wilde laten zien. Hieronder de vorige versie, zie je het verschil? Het licht was zeker spectaculair die ochtend!
