About My son Derek described for me what his band would like to see on their latest album/cd cover. So, I thought I would have shot at it. They wanted a single tree in a field, kind of other-worldly looking and a bit on the dark side. This is one of the images I am showing to the band.

Hi Richard,
I like your comment on this one! Unfortunately that might be the kiss of death for this image if I tell them what you said :)
The previous sample is a little more "dead" looking :)

Thanks Thilo,
I see what you mean about this one having more room around the tree. I think this makes the image less cramped looking. It's possible that the blank space on a cover might get filled up with some kind of print too. So I will have to account for that. I also have other shots of the previous post with more space around it. I'll give them a few options and see what happens. So far, they like them both.

Love the composition, and soft tones. Probably to "alive" for a Punk band though. Hahahaha. This is more of a Sara McLaughlin look. Congrats my friend.

Hi Andre,

I like the toning and the bold outcome that creates a huge contrast. I think the heavy frame is also nice. So my guess is that this will shine on the cover =)

very good work.

best wishes,
Thilo

Hi Mervo,
The good thing is, If they use one of these images, it will be on an LP cover as well as a cd. So, it will be a good size image! Still up in the air right now though. So far, they just said they like them, but haven't committed.

I was thinking, before I even read your description, the square format that you chose here and the contrast and tones in the shot look very cool, and then I read your About and it all added up! Good job Andre, I like the idea for the CD.

Thanks Fadel,
I am with you on this exactly. I too prefer the ground in this image and the tree and clouds in the other. Maybe I should go and dig up the other tree and plant it on this spot :)

This is powerful too Andre! I like the ground in the one because it is low contrast but I prefer the tree in the other one.

Thanks Dave,
I figured they were looking for something a little dark and foreboding. The other one has similar toning. I'm still not sure which one I like best. I still might have to go back and try a few more. I'm at the mercy of a punk band :)

Thanks Kanwarpreet,
It seems split about 50/50 at the moment. Some people prefer the clouds in the other shot.
Thanks for visiting my portfolio.

Hi Susie,
You're right! It sounds pretty easy at first. What happens in reality is what you think is a great looking tree, is usually surrounded by some other things that You just don't want in the photo. There are some great, old, dead apple trees around here that fit the bill perfectly except it is so hard to isolate them to get a decent background. The two that I just posted are within 50 yards of eachother and they are obviously different types of tree. I think they came out pretty well considering. Now I have to wait for artistic approval from a teen-age punk band :)

It sounds like this might fit the bill perfectly. I was just thinking yesterday that trees must be social things, because there aren't many that are standing alone in a field. So they gave you a tougher assignment than they probably knew.
Hope you have a great 2006 Andre. I'm looking forward to your new stuff. )

Nice effect with the dramatic clouds and grain, Andre! I like your composition here, as well.
