Location City -  Deadvlei
State -  SOUTHERN NAMIBIA
Country - Namibia   Namibia
About This fallen giant couldno longer fight the elements that was slowly eroding it over centuries

Deadvlei, once part of Sossusvlei, according to scientific theory was cut off by moving (windblown) sanddunes from the rest of Sossusvlei about 900 years ago. The big camelthorn trees was approximately 600 - 700 years of age at that stage. Cut off from the regular water supply of the main wetland the trees all died. Due to the lack of moisture and the extreme temparatures the hardwood cores of the big trees were preserved and many of them are still standing - skeletons of their former glory though. I spent a whole day from before sunrise until late afternoon in this magical place - it was like stepping back into time. While taking photos of the many shapes and textures, I was trying to see this place as it was 900 years ago. Every here and there, along the edges and bottomslopes of the dunes, the water of the extraordinary rainy season of 2006 brought some bright green growth - small pieces of evidence of the former glory of this place! I stood in awe and did not want to go. One sure thing - I'm going back!

amazing story. It reminds me of the bristlecone pine tree that is some 1000 years old and growing in the harshist conditions where no other trees will grow.
I love this composition and color.
cheers,
nicole

Joggie, I hope someday I can find terrain with such photographic opportunity. The winter rain season has now come on the Pacific Coast and the wet-green is overwhelming - such a contrast to this arid place!

This is quite well done, and could have easily exceeded in the silhouette category.

Your perspective is excellent, and the composition shows a level of professional flair.

Wow, the contrast of the desert colors and the starkness on the blackened tree really knocks me out. Beautiful work!
