About I put on my 75-300 zoom to get a closer shot of this sharp-shinned hawk in a nearby tree in Brackenridge park. I took one shot, and then he started moving as if he was going to fly away.

Darn, I thought, I've scared him away.

But instead, he flew right TOWARD me. He had spotted a small snake in the grass between us, and was on his way to Snack Town. I fired off many shots but most of them were out of focus, as I had not changed my AF mode to track moving subjects.
Now, I know better before I take my first shot.

Great stuff. Better luck next time. It always bothers me when I hit the button and realize I'm in the wrong mode for what I'm trying to do--two choices: shoot anyway or waste time changing modes. At least this one came out pretty well.

What a spectacular action shot, some times we just have to go with the setting we are all ready on, or miss the shot, I know I take chances and just hope I get what I am after, I am older so I just don't think to fast. It looks just like he is comming for you, yes I read what you wrote. thanks for sharing.

Very nicely done Paul. Great perspective and an excellent composition (even if by chance!). Beautiful feather pattern and geometry. There's a lot to remember with these supersmart cameras! You did well to get these settings close. A shooting "tip" I was given recently while attempting to shoot Bald Eagles, was to study birds of prey at rest, just before they take flight they "lighten the load" by jettisoning waste.....be ready to shoot! -john

Yeah, Ed, I politely asked the tree to leaf, but it ignored me.
Typical.

Great shot Paul.

Too bad the background colour is so similar to the subject.

All the best,
Ed

The shot just before this was also in focus, Jim, but it lacked the powerful dynamics of this down-stroke.

Yeah, AJ, all the shots after this were out of focus, but hey, if I got ONE good one...I WIN. ;)

If this is what you get when you have not set the AF mode as you want, can't wait to see the next results ...

There's a wonderful echo of the pattern of the feathers in the bark - it all seems to work really well, with just enough DOF and tonal differentiation for the hawk to stand out from the background.
